Sombra Interference
I bought a Sombra Shadow III; I was impressed with its size, wieght, channel flexibility and failsafe options.
I wanted to use this rcvr in place of the Hitec Electron 6 on my Corona Heli. This Hitec rcvr works fine, but it doesn't have failsafe and will not flywheel through bad radio frames, e.g., interference, signal fade. I'm using a CC25 ESC on the Corona; bad frames, and in turn bad signal to the CC25, result in a motor shut down; not a good thing when hovering 6' off the ground. Well, the Sombra did not work very well: It appeared as though it was full of interference, e.g., the Gyro LED was constantly flickering from interference swamped signal inputs and the swashplate servos were dancing around. Now I had a challenging time getting the Electron 6 based radio system to settle down when first installed; this heli seems very prone to interference. Furthermore the aluminum crutch (frame; stock component is plywood) upgrade did not seem to help this problem; it seemed the aluminum coupled a lot of ESC noise to the radio and gyro. However I did get it to work, except for an occasional fade (hope for altitude). The key is to separate the rcvr/gyro from the motor/ESC by as much distance as possible, see attached photos.
Has anyone else had a similar interference problem with the Sombra rcvr? Given this first expereince with the Sombra, I'm concerned with using this rcvr on other planes or helis. What's the track record for this new design?
Thanks
