I think I've read somewhere (perhaps here) that the out-of-the-box length of a receiver antenna for a 72Mhz radio is 31 inches. Is that correct? I think a kitten ate some of mine.

No, it is usually 39 to 41 inches long. anything in that range will work fine.

The RX antenna is 39.4 inches from the board to the tip.

The RX antenna should be 39.4 inches. That is the optimum 1/4 wave leingth for 72 MHZ. Anything shorter than that will hurt your range.

One meter (39.375 in) + or - 1/4 inch and I have NEVER seen two of identical length, so it can't be that critical.

Thanks guys. I thought mine looked short, and after seeing the goofy look on the kitten's face, I thought I better measure it. It is right at 29 inches from receiver case to tip. Guess I will solder a piece of good 22 gauge wire on it to make it the proper length and drown the kitten.
