Default Hitec transmitter

I need opinions. I have an old Hitec Focus 4 TX which I bought through Ebay. I installed new batteries before using it to fly a 4 Star 40 which subsequently dove straight into the ground. Don't know for sure whether it was "Dumb Thumbs" or radio problem. Probably the former. My question is this. When fully charged, the output needle will read full. However, after about ten minutes of use, the needle drops to just over 100 on the scale. Also, if TX is charged and not used for a few days, the output needle will drop to about half way between 100 and Full. I don't have this kind of problem with my Futaba 4VF. I am considering changing the crystal in my RX and using the Futaba TX. Any suggestions?

Pull the batteries from the TX and put them on a cycler for testing. If they don't test within 90% of rated capacity... trash them.

The batteries should hold "decent" charge for about a month. (appx 1 to 2% loss per day is considered normal for NiCds.)
