Default Digital Servos? I've got some questions....

I've been considering getting Hitec 625's and 605's for a UCD3D and haven't really even considered getting digital servos. But to be honest I really don't know that much about them. I've read that they center better and have more holding power, but I guess the downside is that they suck up more juice.

Recently it was suggested to me to try the Hitec 5625 or the 5645. After reviewing the specs they seem to have ton's of torque and similar speed and are about $15 more per servo.

The main question I have about them is can you just put them in a plane like you would a standard servo, or do you need to buy some type of programmer like they have at servocity.com? Are there any other downsides to the digitals other than power consuption? I guess they do seem to weight a bit more, which is something I'm really not crazy about. Of course of they are mounted in the tail of a UCD then the extra weight will probably be better (Considering most UCDs are nose heavy).

Anyway, comments?

Also, I remember hearing some people talk about some digital servos dying in flight leading to crashed airplanes. Was I dreaming this, or is there actually a problem with some digitals?

If you buy digital servos, of any make, just plug them in and go fly.

Servos will break down like many other things, it happens.

If you had a some digitals and non-digitals, where would be the best control surface to use the digitals on? Ailerons, rudder, elevator??? 4721 vs. 8411

Thanks

That would depend on the type of aircraft and type of flying you do., But I would use the 8411 on the Rudder and 4721 on the other surfaces assuming you use two on elevator.

Looking at a AW 29% extra. Would the 2-4721 ( being converted to 2721) work on either the aileron or elevator. I also have 2 4131 that I would like to use also. Planning on a 8411 on the rudder for the torque.

Present plan>

2 4131 on the ailerons
2 2721 on the elevators
1 8411 on the rudder

Unless there is some compelling reason to go digital??

If one likes to save money and still have plenty of torque, how about an 80" Giles with a ZDZ 40 and on the rudder I'm using only a Futaba 148. But here is the catch, I am also using a Boost Tab on the rudder. A bit more work but well worth it.

On a plane this size (12-17lbs) I would go with Multiplex Royal--super dependable---about the same price as Hitec 5645s. I ran Royals on my AW 29% Edge years ago (Jumbo on rudder)
