Default Revolution whip antenna anyone

I purchased 2 revolution whip antennas distributed by Horizon Hobbies. I want to use it and I was wondering if anyone else has used this on one of their airplanes/ receivers and how it worked out. It says helicopter accessories on it but I cant see why you couldnt use it on an airplane....unless range is the issue.

I've never used one on a plane before... I would think it would still work ok but may shorten your rage a little.

I went and typed in key word "whip antenna" and I got all kinds of info and opinions. There were no negative results from using athe base loaded antennas....so far!

As with anything else, there are considerations.

The Revolution offering is probably the best among those available, IMO. I've used these, along with Dean's and a couple of others, for years in both model types. They work just fine in airplanes... IF you follow generic "antenna protocol".

IOW, you take the same cautions with the base-load whip that you would with a regular one-meter wire. Keep it away from batteries, servos, wire pushrods, etc., avoid composite structures and the "Faraday cage" effect, and so forth and so on.

I have one in my ShowTime, mainly because I was too lazy to send it back to The Empire to get a regular wire re-installed when I sold the heli it was in.

As long as you don't botch the "installation" (cutting the regular wire and soldering/crimping the connector), you should be just fine in an airplane. I fly pretty far out, and range simply has not been an issue in the 14 years I've been using these things.

Steve when you say Faraday cage effect, what is that? also composite fuses, I am assuming you dont mean fibreglass but carbon fibre and such?

Correct. They can (and do) interfere with RF signals; most folks with composite fuselage airplanes handle this by running an external antenna, like a boat mount.

Do a Google for more details on the Faraday effect; its pretty complicated and I don't have the time to type it all out this morning....

Hi Steve,

I've been regularly snipping the standard factory antenna off of receivers and then soldering a replacement (one meter) antenna wire back on when necessary with no ill results so far. I leave about 3" of stock wire to the receiver so there is plenty of wire there to work with. Am I doing something that shouldn't be done???

Thanks,

Ernie

Dunno, Ernie; I've never tried that.

I was referring to the tiny pin connector these whips come with; you have to snip the big wire and attach the female component to the free end.

Just ran a search at Horizon and came up with two more whip antennas by Hayes, both under $10.

For what its worth, I only use whip antena, but not base loaded.

I cut off what needs to be cut off from the receiver and replace it with solid piano wire.

this really works for you? How do you determine how much to cut off and how are you wiring 2 antennas?

You only need one antena with one receiver, here I was experimenting with a new setup for two receivers.

you run the antena inside to where you want to exit, and cut off the extra wire, then you make your whip the lenght of the cut off wire. Simple and you don't get a shorter range since you simply replaced the cut off wire with Piano wire and everything is the same lenght as before.

I now use brass to make the adapter so that I can solder the wire to it and use goop as a reinvorcement as a safety for vibration, Never had a problem.
