Default FM in car transmitter for an MP3 player.

Ok this isn't exactly RC related but this thing has gotten me a little curious and I figured I'd tap into the vast knowledge base of radio mechanisms here.

I have an FM radio transmitter that I use for my MP3 player which transmitts at about 88.1 mhz to 90.1 mhz. When I first used it the sound was decent but now (about 6 months later) I seem to be getting more and more static as time goes on. I attached the transmitter right next to the radio with some velcro.
Now, what I was wondering is whether the transmitter is simply getting worse or if somehow having the transmitter in close proximity to the radio somehow upsets the tuning mechanism of the radio?

Interesting post for an RC forum. Your fm transmitter is likely getting interference from a local radio station transmitting on a similar frequency. I have an XM unit that I had this problem with. With that unit I could select a different frequency.
