RE: heli antenna on plane?
Yep, these work just fine. I believe they are high-gain type antennas that have an internal matching coil to make up for the difference is wavelengh (making them electrically equal in length to the standard 1/4 wave antenna that comes with our radio's).
Wavelength (in meters) = 30000000 / 72000000
Wavelength = 4.17 meters
Quarter wavelength = 4.17/4 meters = 1.04 meters = ~39 inches.
It is possible to make antennas "look like" quarter wave by adding a component that does just that. And they generally perform as good as the original quarter wave length antenna but will not have the range of the standard antenna. But, this range may be a couple miles vs, what we normally fly in RC..perhaps 500 yards or so at most, which is way within the range of our transmitters with aircraft with these "shorter" antennas.
