Befuddled by Servo Choices
I've only been involved with .40 size planes and I've always used std Futaba servos, 3004s, with no problem. Now I'm putting together a Twist .60, using an OS .91 two stroke and I understand I need beefier servos. I'm looking at all the choices and the wide variety of prices. I want to balance performance and cost and am not sure how to go. The Tower servos are a lot less in money but how are they in quality and life span? Who makes them? Also, I understand that metal gears are stronger but do not last as long. With my Twist, are they a good thing? Will the nylon gears work just as well? I've been told that a digital servo with torque in the 70-80 inch pound range will be ideal. Are there general rules in picking servo power? I'll appreciate any comments.

. I think you meant 70 to 80 oz. inch servos. You might want to look at some 3152's (digital) or maybe even the HS-645MG's (analog). If money is no object then the Futaba 9252's would be a great servo. There are plenty of servo choices out there for what you want to do with them. Just do a search here on RCU for what's available and find something that you're comfortable spending the money on.

The standard upgrade these day's would be to a Hitec 645 or digital 5645. Best price I have seen would be through Troy Built Models. Check the sight out, It has alot good info. These are very solid metal gear servo's that have plenty of torque but are still reasonably priced.

G'day Mate,
Unless you are going to fly 3D, those standard servos will be fine, it's only a 90FS, I use 4.8 Kilo servos on my 160 size planes, except for the rudder, & have no problems.
