Default AM radio obsolete?

Hi, I have a fleet of cars and trucks, but rescently got my hands on an older futaba 4ch 75mhz am radio. Would this be an ok radio to be running in a 3ch plane, or would the risk of cotastrophy be too large?

Don't fly a plane on 75mhz. 75 is for ground vehicles, 72 is for aircraft. I flew some AM a couple years ago and didn't have any problems. There are others who would never do it any more.

So it's usable but not air frequency? You cant change to 72 so I guess it's just going into something else =/

Definately not for use in the air. Surface use only.

You can use 75 in the air but it's against the law.

I knew this before (should've remembered before posting[:@]), but does anyone know why it's illegal?

I think because AMA wants them separate so that's the way the FCC rules it.

This may sound wrong, but honestly, will the cops arrest you for driving your rc on the wrong frequency? Now I'm just wondering, because I have other plans for the radio anyway.

Don't think so, but if the plane hit and injured someone there might be a problem.

When a 75mhz frequency that's being legally used causes you to crash and damage a person or property, then yes, they'll arrest you. Otherwise it's just a fine up to $10,000. No biggie.

The real problem, though, is that no club would ever let you use such a radio.

Custom,
Being "arrested" really shouldn't be your main concern. Respect your fellow modelers and keep your surface vehicles on surface frequencies and your flying models on the air frequencies. Your less likely to hurt someone (or yourself) that way.

Also, generally speaking, a lot of the car radios come with SC RX's that don't have the required range for an airplane.

Well, I was just wondering out of curiosity, I have no further plans to get this system into a plane or anything that flies. I will use it in a rock crawler now that I understand the frequency in the air is strictly prohibited. Guess this wasn't a cheap ticket to get into planes after all[]

fsfjkid, there is no difference in range between a SC and DC reciever. You can get good or bad range with either. For instance, many JR and Berg are SC and have the same range as most good DC receivers. Range is purely a matter of design and component quality.
