RE: Will 72MHz be gradually phased out with 2.4GHz?
I'm waiting for everyone at my club to get a 2.4 GHz radio so I will have the only 72MHz and and not need one 8-). I suppose it is inevitable. Just as rotary dial telephones were phased out for touch tone telephones, so will the 72MHz be some day. Prices will come down and more and more people will get the newer transmitters. The problem I have for the 2.4GHz is the price of the receivers. I am a sport flier and to change out 6 72MHz receivers for the newer ones is pricey at this time.

My guess, and that's all it is, is that the FCC probably wants the entire 72 MHz band to sell to commercial users. The frequencies between ours have already been sold so with 2.4 GHz available, why not make some additional money? My second guess is that it will be awhile, though.

Does anyone know if you could design a spread spectrum 72Mhz system that would work on the channels between what we have now. . . kinda like the HD radio frequencies on the FM music band.

I suspect at some point the 72MHZ radios will no longer be made but I doubt we will
see a significant change untill about 5 or so years.

As far as I know, there are no 2.4 receivers small enough for some indoor and HLG. Also, 2.4 doesn't work with all carbon fuselages. They'll need to get these types of issues sorted out first. I'm staying with 72 for the time being because I've never had a problem with it and I'd rather spend the money else where for now.

2.4 Ghz technology is probably here to stay. There will be system improvements as experience is gained. Just like regular TV and HDTV, I would not expect 72Mhz to become obsolete any time soon. There are some flying sites where 72Mhz may be more stable than 2.4 Ghz. Just my $0.02 worth. I'm still going to keep my JR frequency select module and R2000 scan select Rx.

Assuming normalcy in accounting systems as volume goes down costs go up. The Distributors will really be the ones who determine the end (yes, ultimately the user)------When? Good question----and one for which there is no answer presently.
Could be a couple of years, could be five, could be ????------BUT the FCC will have to allow for reasonable "use times" for existing equipment. (perhaps that should be the FCC has, in the past, allowed for reasonable "use times")

There are still 27mhz systems out there. Plenty of AM 72mhz systems, too. Change happens slowly, and I believe most 2.4ghz switchers will change because of new capabilities being offered now and in the future, rather than by some as-yet nonexistent government mandate.

When you see trainers conbo's that have 4 ch radio's that are 2.4 then you will see the end of 72. Just look at the E- Flight CX2 at $189. it has a 2.4 gig 5ch with it. Dennis

RE: Will 72MHz be gradually phased out with 2.4GHz?
My feeling is that as licensed users press the FCC for additional 72 MHz channels they will have a reason to eventually end our use of 72. Money talks and we don't make the government anything, licensed users do. If the RC industry has an alternative to 72 MHz and the FCC can make a case that we have been given plenty of time to switch over, they will do it. It may take some time, several years would probably be the case, but grab the frequencies they will.

Seems like a strange question considering the manufacturers don’t seem to be capable of shipping anything 8 channels and over.
