Default Spektrum TX packs... 1.2v or 1.5 x 8 = Enough ?

I've seen a few battery packs for sale that are rechargeable for teh DX3 Transmitter. Only problem is that 8 cells at 1.2 Volt (as most rechargeables are) is not full power of 8 x 1.5 Volt as required by it.

Is there a viable option or are teh packs I'm seeing for around 30.00 on E-bay set to higher voltage ?

Links to a 12 volt rechargeable pack would be greatly appreciated.

Also.. Why is it that Rechargeables are 1/2 volt anyway ?
I feel sorta ripped off when I buy them at 3.00 a cell and they are .3 volts less than an alkaline cell of similar size.
