"2.4 GHz signals may be attenuated by up to .05 dB/km by torrential rain (4 inches per hour)."

I couldn't link to the article referred to by Campy but found this in the book for what it's worth.

since a mile is about 1.6 kM, that would only be about 0.08 dB/mile, and I don't very often fly a mile away from myself. Heck, you get a lot more variation than that with things like antenna orientation, etc.

Unless there was something else in that article that we're not seeing?

Last time I checked, Rain and RC equipment do NOT mix. So if you are flying in a 4 inch-per-hour rain, you have more dangerous problems other than the signal being attenuated.

I don't have windshield wipers on my glasses so I don't fly in rain no matter how heavy or light.

I heard that the DX7 doesn't work well if used while swimming and that volcanic ash and debris can significantly reduce the range. I am holding back on getting one until these issues are resolved.

Should not be too much of a problem while flying - the attenuation in visibility of the aircraft should keep it in very close during a rainfall of that magnitude.
In the case of a rain column passing between the pilot and aircraft, the loss of sight of the plane is still more of a concern, not to mention the probable electrical interference from the lightning activity.

2.4 DSS systems

last monday I was flying a 2.4 DSS park flier

I was flying an EPP flying wing

it started to rain...

so what the heck it was EPP foam and electric

lets just keep flying

I experienced the first time ever for me GLITCHES on my 2.4 gig system

I was out in more rain than most fly in...

but it WAS a problem and fail-safed several times...

so please be advised 2.4 DSS is succeptable to

I've used my Nomadio Sensor in the rain two or three times on my HPI Baja, not a single problem.

Wasn't light rain either, it was just times I really wanted to test a new part, and didn't wanna wait a day.

Well, I guess there IS a reason all the radio manuals say "Do not fly in the rain".

Nothing is going to be totally 100% reliable under all circumstances - even with a live pilot on board airplanes go out of control and crash.

As for flying the 2.4GHz radio in the rain, I would think the signal attenuation is the least of the problems - water in the receiver, motor, and esc will have much worse affects. The wet airplane will also tend to be somewhat conductive and block the signal, as well as water on the antenna affecting the resonant tuning, or simply providing a conductive path to any uninsulated portion of the antenna (will also corrode the copper wire in the antenna over time).

Remember that the ESC is normally mounted for good airflow, so rain will probably get underneath the heatshrink covering, and do some major damage.

To those of us that fly in Seattle, flying in the rain is a major concern. If you can't fly in the rain you don't get to fly. It don't rain 4in/hr though.

Mesa is very close to Seattle?
In my years of flying -the number of times I flew -intentionally in rain-- -never.
rain here -is attached to thunder -a close friend of lightning which is not a friend of those wandering around with antennae poked in the skies.
SHAZAM!
