Default 2.4Ghz antenna... the facts?

When I had a Nomadio Sensor system, the manual and support staff stated that the unshielded section of the antenna should be sticking out of the body (it's the only part that needs to be)

I now have a Futaba 3PKS with FASST that is going in a 1/8th scale Mugen buggy build, and I was wondering what is the real deal with the antennas, does it actually have to be sticking out of the body? 2.4Ghz in a home wireless network doesn't seem to be effected that much by a wall, so why would this be effected much by a 40 thousands thick lexan body?
