Default An idea to increase Control Surface speed

Hi everyone,

I just had an idea to get faster resonse times from servos.
You would set up the servos with mechanically too much movement (ie, furtherest hold from centre on servo horn, and closets hole to the hinge on the control horn) and then use EPA to reduce the movement to what you want.
Because instead of having 100% EPA, 40% would take less time to get there, would it not?
Just an idea...

Default At half the force

Yes, you are correct, but this is a bad idea because you have half the force and more chance of flutter

Good idea, in theory. If you have servos with a lot of excess torque and small control surfaces it might be a good idea. Unfortunately, you are more likely to get slower performance due to overloading the servo. Also, you will lose a lot of the precision you would have had with a full range of motion in the servo output. i.e. a small amount of servo motion would translate to a large movement of the control surface - not as good.

Set the servo and control horn up so the maximum servo throw produces the required control surface movement. The endpoint adjustments can be used to fine tune this. If you need faster control surface response, buy faster (more $$$) servos!

Another safer option is going to 6V battery packs.

What you are describing DOES work and is commonly used, although not to the extremes you describe for the reasons mentioned above.

Good point on the 6V battery pack! You will get an improvement in speed as well as torque. The downside is slightly increased weight and since current draw will be greater with higher voltage, the charge will not last quite as long. Check batteries frequently until you know how long they will last.
