Default Futaba 9c radios and their color

I currently using two Futaba 6xa transmitters and would like to upgrade to one of Futaba's 9c radios.

In researching at Tower Hobbies (which uses incorrect pictures), I noticed that some of their 9c transmitters have a gold tint on the face and some have a silver face. What determines which color is which? Is the Super series the determining factor? Is it whether it comes with the PCM/PPM reciever? Airplane versus helicopter? 75 mhz? Synthesized?

What exactly determines if it has a gold or silver face?

Thanks,

Michael

Not sure about the colour. Mine is silver.

The programming is the same on all 9C tx's. The heli version differs from the acro version in as much as where one or two of the switches are located.
You can select PPM or PCM for each model memory in the programming for the Tx. The model numbers do determine whether a PCM or PPM Rx is supplied if you are buying the complete set with Rx and servos etc.

Great Tx - enjoy it

Those are just some funky pictures of the radios...

The Super is the only 9C currently manufactured and they are all the same color, silver without "gold" tinting.

As previously noted, they all have the same programming with just a slight difference in a couple of switches and no ratchet on the throttle stick of the heli versions. Heli's also default to heli when a new model is setup, but since that may be changed and you can assign any function to any switch, it's not a big deal.

Just pick the one with the rx/servo combination you want...

Oh, I forgot the PPM/PCM question...

In the PPM mode you have only 8 channels, you only have 9 channels when operating in the PCM mode with a 9 channel capable Futaba rx, and then it's just an on/off function with no proportional control. While PPM stuff from other manufacturers with a negative shift capability will work with this tx in it's PPM mode, the various PCM functions are proprietary and brand specific.

mscic,

When did you get the gold 9C? What is the serial number an the base?

My 9C is a combination of bright and non reflective silver, serial #20612550.

I saw a 9C TX a month or so ago that was totally bright / reflective. Has anyone else this?

I bought one of the new 9C's when the 9C's first came out, right about the time the 8U Super was comeing out. Mine has always been bright gold. I sent the 9C in this past year to Hobby Services an they were going to replace the front cover (I guess the gld was flaking off the old face pannnel) sny way I asked them if the had a Chrome relacement and they said that all the 9C's including the 9C Supers had all gold face plates. The reason why the 9C in the advertisment piture had a chrome face pate was the due to the lighting when the picture was taken. So If you find a chrome faced 9C or 9C Super and are able to latch onto it, do so, It could end up being a rare find. Then call Hobby Services and ask them why it has a Chrome face plate instead of a gold one. I would be interesting to see what they have to say. But don't let them talk you into sending it in for servicing because they make change it back to gold and then charge you for it.

Thanks for the quick surplus of responses.

Unfortunately, some responses seem to conflict so I'll attempt to summarize what we know.

Futaba denies making silver faceplate's.
Marcellus owns a silver TX. Could we get details on whether your was by default airplane, helicopter, synthesized, ppm or pcm and whether it was a super? Thanks
Zeeb says all current models in both Super and regular are manufactures in silver (contradicting Futaba's claim).
Mscic says the original 9c he owns is gold. Is this synthesized? default airplane, helicopter, ppm or pcm? Thanks
Funfly8 has a gold original, pcm modulated transmitter for airplanes. Is this synthesized?

Perhaps we can discover a pattern based on a trait of these transmitters. If we make a list of the 9c transmitter everyone has an whether it is gold or not I think we can do this.

If you have a 9c transmitter, please post the following.
1. Gold or silver face?
2. Super or non super series?
3. Default modulation (PCM or PPM)?
4. Synthesized?
5. Manufacture date (if you can find it)?
6. Default aircraft type (airplane or helicopter)?

Thanks again for all the help, you guys are great.

Michael

9c and 9csuper and they are both gold, pcm helicopter versions. I've never seen a silver 9c ever. I've seen some flash pictures that made them look silver but I've never seen one in person.

Mine's a 9CAP, purchased just about the same time the Super came out. (Got a good deal!)

Gold tint, PCM, Airplane, non-synthesized.

Cheers,

Going to upgrade to a 2.4 Fasst Module & reciever when they come out.

My 9c Super Acro is also golden tinted, although a bit of it has flaked.

bought about 5 years ago, bought it as transmitter only.

Now they need a 2.4 ghz version.

In my opinion the best radio out there for the average modeler.

Okay, maybe we're just dealing with semantics here and what each of us might call a color...

My 9C Super is about two years old, the 9ZAP is about 18 months old. While there may be what some would characterize as a "gold" faceplate on the 9C, I certainly wouldn't call it that. There is a bit of a tint to it when compared with the 9Z, but I would call the 9Z a chrome finish which in my judgement is, or can be, quite different than "silver" both in color and texture. The same color on differing textures can create what appears to be a substantial difference in the colors.

Here's a pic of the two tx's side by side in natural light.

For what it's worth, there are several other members in our club with 9C's and they all seem to be the same color as mine. Whether you choose to call it gold or silver is up to you, but you might consider finding one and looking at it.

My 'silver' 9C is the same colour as the one in the photo. Maybe in the evening sunlight it has a 'golden' hue to it. It was a non super, bought in England a year after the 9C was launched for about $400.

Seriously though, why does the colour matter?! Mine has been a great performer and that's all I really care about!

I guess its all about the Bling Bling, You know the saying "You ain't got a thing unless you got the bling!"
I like my gold 9C but a siver or chrome would be cool too.

I think it's actually supposed to be "Titanium" color, which is sort of a gold-toned silvery color. I think the confusion is from those who only have the one radio, and can't place it next to another model to compare the colors.

I think you guys are right. I now believe all the 9c series either have a "gold" or "titanium" look to them. The pictures which appear to be a pure "silver" or "chrome" all look as if they have been edited or taken in poor light.

I appreciate everyones help... thanks,

Michael

I have a 9C super with the campac an it has a touch of a gold tint not alot. was looking at a fellow flyers 9C an it is really gold in color. It is one without the campac card

My 9C also has a red/blue light when turned on
His 9C has a red/green light when turned on

There is a huge diff in the color of these two radios without a doubt. Maybe they changed somethings up on the newer ones. Not any of the 9C are the same sivler as the 9ZAP 12ZA or 14MZ Though

I have a recent 9CAPs (bought 12/2006) and when compared to my 6XAs it definitely has a warmer "champaign" tint to it. The 6XA (3 years old) is a bright chrome finish. I've seen an older non-super 9C at the LHS and it is definitely more golden than my super 9C TX. I have the red/blue LED indicators and the synthesized RF TX module as well as the R319DPS RX.

The programming in the 9C is quite a step up from the elementary offerings of the 6X. I spent nearly the entire weekend getting all the desired features of my quad-flap UltraStick 40 set up the way I wanted via a DSC hookup. Using the GLD-2FLP mode, I now have normal ailerons, flaps on a 3 position switch, crow activated on another switch and full span ailerons via a 3rd switch.
