LED's are best, they use very little current, are low voltage and last forever (as long as you don't hook them up backwards). To switch the lights on/off you'll need either a optical switch that connects to your rec or a servo that trips a micro switch. Good luck!

If you are planning to fly at night, you don't need a switch to turn them off. You probably want them to stay on as long as possible.

If you are planning to have landing lights or wingtip lights, there are a number of electronic switches on the market that plug into an unused receiver channel and are powered by an EXTERNAL battery.

I would not use the receiver battery for lights.

I agree LED's are the best bet BUT you cannot just connect these to the RX battery or you will burn them out instantly. Each type and colour has a different voltage rating. If you follow the link that I provided you will find everything that you need. First the lights are available in various shapes and sizes, based on high brightness LED's. Then there are controllers which you can just plug into your Rx and go.
They work very well indeed. Look in Model Lighting at the left hand side.

I guess I didn't make that clear uh? While I didn't say to connect the lights to your rec batt, I didn't say not too!. There are exceptions of course, I have the lights on an electric heli and electric airplane connected to the motor battery which also happens to power the receiver. But then, that's safe to do because the motor will stop long before the rec looses power. You must use a separate battery from the receiver battery on fuel powered aircraft! (Probably not a bad idea on electrics too if the aircraft can handle the extra weight)

Good advice from JohnMac- You must control the voltage to ANY lights you hook up.
