I have one of the power HD 2550A from TBM (12kg, 165oz) on my 50cc edge on the rudder and it works great I've only got about 3 or 4 flights with it but its holding up fine I'll keep ya up to date... it has good speed and is very accurate.

I agree with one exception. I have them in a new Magichand Sukoi from TBM. They seem to center well and are strong. I have about 15 flights on them and had no issues until the last flight. I am still investigating. One aileron servo locked and I had to force land the plane holding full opposite aileron just to stay level. saved the plane but smashed the gear. On the ground the servo was jumping around. Turned off system and on again. this time the servo went full lock again. All other channels were fine and the radio/recvr is fine (tried in otherplane). Very concerned. TBM is sending a replacement. I will install new servo and reeval over mem day w/e.

well, if its the servo there's alwayz a couple bad eggs in the batch and I think you may have got one... lets just hope this doesn't happen alot with these the price is right and with the good specs we don't want these to have the reputation like the Tower Pro 995's....

I hope these prove to be great. I am impressed, save for the issue I am investigating. Will keep everyone posted.....

I'd back em... the thing about most 40% planes is there are multiple servos per control surface, meaning more redundancy on that surface... I would get the digital 220oz for a 40%er I think there the 9150's...

Yeah, I know.... My 2550a servo stopped working on me one day, I opened it up and found that one of the leads from the motor to the board had vibrated loose, a little solder and its back working again... If you look at the TBM video of the Magic hand yak-54 they have these installed on there plane... I only have that one on my 30% yaks rudder, I'm gonna get more so I can put them all around, they have good speed and if they can power my rudder around the rest of my surfaces should be easy...

I've gone back to Hitec. I've had two go bad and the last one cost me my plane. The rudder locked to the end point (yes it was set up correctly) after a manuever...that is it never returned to neutral. They are a good price...but as in most things you get what you paid for. I'm done with them. I need to have full confidence in my servos...two bad on same plane has made the risk not worth it to me. Maybe you'll be fine...as for me no more of these. Hitecs have worked well for me for years...so much for trying something new.

Speaking of something new...Now ask about my JR 12x. Not that is awesome!!!

I've only been flying for about 8 months now and I've had every type of servo go bad on me, Futaba, Hitec, etc... I guess its what you make of it... when mines quit on me it just went dead and the rudder didn't lock up on me, thank god. well, I'll keep you guys informed on them and let ya know if any more bad events should arise...

T.J.

Oh, yeah cagmo which servos where you using the digital ones? or the analog?

Thought I would pull this thread forward.

I am working on a H9 Taylorcraft and all the surfaces have Power HD 1201MG servos. Specs are good with dual BB for a $23 MG servo. The plane had about 5 flights when we bought it and the servos were bought new for the plane. So with Redwing and TBM still selling these servos are they good or should I swap them out??

I have used quite a bit of the power hd servos. Great for there price. I'll keep using them. The biggest Bird I've used them in was a 30cc and were great. But haven't tried them in my big planes. Stuck on Hitec and Savox. But plan to put them in my 50cc challenger Pitts

Thanks for the feedback.

I am in the middle of programming the plane and I'm pleased with what I see so far. These servos are fast on 6v!!
They look like they return to center very well too. The Taylorcraft needed a bit more rehab than I thought and we hope to maiden it next weekend.

Aloha Gentlemen,
I've used HD 1501's on several models, and I'm beginning to really love these little jewels. I've a set in a ESM F6F, 20cc powered Big Stick, a GBR3 20cc powered model and I'm currently building a ESM Skyraider-all with HD1501's. I used all my HD servo's on a five cell nickel batteries and I've yet to have a failure. These are strong with 200+ inch/oz. of pull and are the same size as your normal standard servo. I purchased all mine from Troy Built Models on sale, for less then $13.00/each plus shipping. I am now only buying these servos to replace my standard servos in my models and I highly recommend these servo's. Prior to finding out about these servo's, all I used were Airtronics 94322's ( Airtronics standard BB plastic geared servo) and these are a much better deal at the same price

If you look into the model below, you will see that I added a little more support for the mounted servo's. I did this because with an excess of 200 inch/lbs. of pull, you will need the extra support. The plywood supplied to support the servo's flexed and I like a stiff servo support. Also...be careful when you first set up these servo's...so that you do not have full rotation of the servo on your initial set up (you just may pull out a control horn...ask me how I know).

Soft Landings Always,
Bobby of Maui

Bob,
Good to hear of your positive experience.

I maidened the Taylorcraft Saturday and was very pleased with the 1201MG servos. I too run 6v NiMh. A lot of bang for the buck.

Hay Pete,
I ran the HD1201's too, but found that the gears they use in the servo's are not as strong as I would like. While putting my model into my van, I bumped the rudder a bit, not hard enough to do any damage to the rudder, but with enough force to move the rudder a little. Well, the gears stripped in the HD1201 servo...twice on me. So I went over to the HD1501's with metal gears and that solved my problem. Ok...I can be a real cluts at times, but a bit of hanger rash is normal over the years, and this model is over eight years old. The cost of the HD1501MGBB's over the HD1201's is just a couple of bucks, so I now only buy the metal geared servo's. Other then my lack of dexterity with loading my models into my van, the HD1201's work just fine for me.

I only use Airtronics equipment and I've run these servo's with both the -1 & -3 Rx's with out any issues. My equipment work perfectly with either the HD1201 and HD1501MGBB servo's.

From what I understand of the HD servo's is that the HD1201's have plastic gears and the HD1501MGBB's have metal gears.

Soft Landings Always,
Bobby of Maui
