Default Wedding ring/ 9C Radio Case Causes Glitching

I was setting up a plane after installing some servos and adjusting things on my 9C. While I was holding the radio in sort of a weird way- left hand across to hold the elevator up so I could adjust endpoints with my right hand- my wedding ring (well, not officially until this friday... but I digress) touched the front of the radio case. I didn't know at first it was the ring, but when the servos started jumping, it only took a second to figure it out.

The antenna had one section extended and I could duplicate the problem easily. I also tried it with the antenna fully extended and the same thing. I did not have anyone to watch the plane so I could walk away and try it, so it may be a "close range" thing.

I doubt this would be of too much concern while flying, since, ideally, the ring would never contact the case in the "normal" position of holding a radio. But, you never know.

Watch what you touch.

That could be interesting to watch you trying to explain to the wife why you came back from the flying field and you're not wearing your ring!

Kind of gives new meaning to the term "RC Widow"

Could it be that you were just close enough that you were swamping it? I have seen it many times that the radio would cause glitches if it was too close to the plane. Just a thought.

Possibly, I was about 5-10 ft away. It was one of those things where I would rub/tap the ring on the case and get instant glitching. Then I would sit there a second or two with nothing. Then tap/ rub again... glitching. Weird, huh?

Strange. I used to have a keyboard I could pass my hand about 6 inches over the top and it would type. Electronics are a ton of fun aren't they?

It's not really all tat surprising, actually. You are introducing an electrical element into the antenna (or case, as the case may be), and causing all kinds of wierd thinga to happen to the transmitted signal. When I'm tuning a radio I routinely use my finger to probe around and find sweet spots. I figure my finger is about 100pF. I can shift gain curves, cause or cure random oscillations, all kinds of neet stuff.

BTW, I hope I'm not talking out of school here, but the girl that MHawker is getting ready to marry is the one that climbed up a 75-100 foot tree and rescued his brand new Extra that I put up there the day before. It was in the VERY top, and she got it down UNSCRATCHED. The prop wasn't even broken.

Plus she's funny.

Mike, congratulations to you and your wife-to-be ! Did she really climb to the top of the tree to get your plane down ?? Wow, no wonder you're marrying her !

Didn't you know that flying RC can cause wedding glitches too? Seems only fair that the ring can cause radio glitches.

congrads,

Honest, honey. It was 'glitching'! I HAD to take it off." 'It was "itching" and 'it will get caught on a line' (sailing) comes after the ceremony.

Metal watchband to the case (9C) has the same results at servos!

If you honeymoon in La Paz we have a nice field!

WOW. Thanks for the congrats, guys!

Frank,
I'd rather not hear about what you do with your finger while your "testing".

Raj,

Yup, there's a post here with a pic of the tree. It was about 70-80 feet high. She put on a rock climbing harness we bought JUST for this occasion... and nothing else.... no really... I wasn't getting any wild ideas.

She hoisted herself up limb by limb with me telling her she was crazy the whole time. She got to the top and tied a knot around the prop and lowered the plane. It was pretty cool. I'm no whimp, but there was NO way I was going all the way up that tree. I went half way and started to decide which chainsaw I needed to buy.

Thanks again guys. Here's a pic of the tree.

Default Another alternative

First off, congrats on your impending slavery, er... marriage... :-D

Now I've never had any glitches that involved my wedding ring but I always remove it when I go to the field anyway. I'm afraid of what glo-fuel will do to it.

I would vary the length of the antenna though and see if you can duplicate it. It might just be some weird frequency harmanic that occurs with just the right situation.

I'm surprised no-one mentioned this one yet:

... and one Ring to rule them all...

Congratulations Mike. She's a keeper.

My wedding ring has caused me a lot of problems with flying--sometimes she won't let me go, sometimes she won't let me buy that new plane I need, sometimes she calls me at the field to come home...
