Default Question about Receivers

I need some clarification. I am new to the hobby and learing these details about receivers.

I know about the channels (1-42??). I was told that channels 1-15 is different than 16 on up. The channel numbers might be a little different than what I stated, but what I was told is that if I buy a receiver and use channel 13, I would not be able to use channel 37 or so in it. Something like a high-band and a low-band.

I hope I'm making sense. I am using channel 13 on a positive shift GWS receiver. Do I need to make sure I buy another one for the lower channels or can I use one that has been used on channel 37?

Help Please.

Default Question about Receivers

Normally you buy a transmitter and receiver on the same channel (doesn't matter which channel) and you never change either one. In the US it is illegal to change the crystal on the transmitter, although it is commonly done.
If you must change a crystal, it is better to change it only a little. The theory is that the further you change the receiver from its factory-installed crystal, the more likely that it will be out of tune. Some manufacturers tune their receivers to a "low" or "high" band so that theoretically you can change the crystals within that band without problem. There is not really anything special about low or high.

asylum has inadvertantly double-posted his question. Let's keep all the replies on one thread:
