Default RC Servo extensions. Why do they cost so much!?

I am looking to get between 6 and 8 servo extensions for my new plane as soon as it gets here and I get it RTF. After looking at the prices of the extensions I just want to make my own like I did for my Sig SE. 50' of servo wire and some heat shrink tubing is a WHOLE lot cheaper than 8 $10 servo extensions! Why do they cost so much anyway? Anyplace I can get them for super cheap?

Try Dave at radicalrc.com. I remember that he has offer prices if you get more than one extension. He uses larger gauge wires with gold plated connectors.......

FMA Direct has some for as little as 85 cents. I bought ten of them.

I purchase my extenstions from http://www.rcaccessory.com The prices are good and the wire is heavy duty in JR colors.
http://www.servocity.com also has good prices on prebuilt extensions.

It's the same reason that they charge $1.50 for a couple of 6-32 machine screws, BECAUSE THEY CAN. Greedy *@#%^*#$&*$&%*&$%^(#*%&^#$(*%&^(%*#&^#($*&^$%. <end rant>

Make your own. If you've done it before, you probably have the crimping tool.
10 feet of 22ga JR wire from MAXX is $5.50. Pin sets from Dymond-RC are 10 for $5.00. That's about as cheap as it gets.

What I've done in the past is cust the servo wire and resolder a longer wire in between the servo and the end. Where can I get a crimper at? Making my own removable extensions would be better.

Default EMS

Really inexpensive extensions are here:

Good quality too. Picked some up from their booth at Toledo.

MAXX products has a crimping tool. As does Custom Electronics. Your LHS might have one in stock (mine does!)

I've been told that solder is undesirable in applications like this due to the brittleness it imparts to the wire. There are no solder joints on auto wiring harnesses. I'd think the same applies to airplanes, but will leave that to the experts.

There are solder joints inside your servo, battery pack, and receiver. There is another thread floating out there with a big discussion on this very subject. Solder works great for me...

Of course there's solder in those places. There isn't any where wires are expected to bend and flex a lot. That's the key.

I see your point, but the points where I plan to put them won't be moving much. Even if the wires do move, the solder joints shouldn't be affected (or is it effected?) by the small amount it will move.

When soldering you should twist the joined wires together to get a physical bond and also put some heat shrink tubing over the individual wires and then another piece of heat shrink over all 3 wires, this will reduce the likelyhood of vibration causing a break in the joint.

I agree with lennyk. I was just about to post the same comment. In addition, I normally use an alcohol swab to clean off any flux residue prior to heat shrinking to prevent any long-term corrosion. RMA type fluxes are recommended
