Default newbie DSM2 Bind procedure question?

Just getting back into RC after a 15 year break. I'm about to replace the OEM receiver in a Traxxas eRevo with a Spectrum SR3100 so I can run it off my DX3R transmitter. The instructions say to insert the bind plug in the battery slot and then power up the receiver. This works fine if your speed control is handy. I'd like to be able to bind using a 6V AA receiver battery pack. Can you just connect the battery pack to the throttle servo slot to provide power to the receiver, since the Bind plug is in the battery slot...? Thanks...
