Default 12X or 9103?

I am looking at getting a new radio and have been mostly interested in the 9103. I fly mostly giant scale acro and warbirds. Is the 12X just a 9303 with a case and 3 more channels? What are your guys thoughts?

Thanks!

Have you even read the manual for the 12X? If you had, you wouldn't even be asking the question. It is a no brainer.

You'll be happy with either radio, I have two of each and fly them alot. If I had to do it again I think I'd be very happy with the 9303.

I own one of each and like both of them. The 12X has many expanded and useful features that are not on the 9303. Some of the differences are significant and some are not. In some cases it is like the difference between an Infinity and a Nissan - I also have owned both cars and they are quite different and also much the same. I got the 12X because I wanted it more than I needed it (I didn't) - sort of a personal reward for .................(fill in the blank). If you fly giant scale my guess is that the added flexibility and boolean logic of the 12X would be very useful. The only mystery surrounding the 12X is the very nice looking aluminum case that defies logic when you try to figure out how to position the radio inside.

I also had a 12FG for a few days but, sold it without ever taking it out of the box.

I've had the X9303 as well and now using the 12X.

As previously noted, there really isn't any comparison in the capabilities but begs the question; do you need them?

That in my opinion is a matter of what you want since we don't even "need" RC models....

Bear in mind that I came over to the Spektrum/JR 2.4GHz from 72MHz Futaba radios so I may have a different priority set than someone who's always used JR. This has to do with the ability to assign any function to any switch on the Futaba radios as well as the avialability of more three position switches on the 12X vs. the X9303. With the 12X you can assign virtually any function to any switch which was something I really missed about the Futaba radios when I started flying the X9303. The 12X is not capable of putting ANY function on any switch like the Futaba, but it's close....

It might be a minor inconvenience to most but one of the things that really bugged me was the fact that I could not assign the timer start to the throttle as you can with Futaba, but the 12X has that capability. I'm also getting ready to setup my first model with the 12 channel rx and get away from Matchboxes for the dual servo per aileron setup on 35% size models and while I've not actually done it yet, the 12X has that capability as well where the X9303 does not. I fly mostly IMAC gassers, so the number of availble channels on the X9303 can be made to work with those and I did use the radio for that purpose. I do have an interest in getting into Warbirds and have an ARF and a kit here at the house which have not yet been put together, so I think I might have an understanding of the channel/power requirements those models need and I'm thinking the extra 3 channels which are fully proportional, would be an advantage for those models.

The gimbals on the 12X are like glass and while it may be my imagination, I feel like the model's response to control inputs is more crisp with the 12X vs. the X9303.

It still boils down to whether or not you can justify the price difference to yourself, no one else can do that for you....

Howard,

Take a look at this thread for a couple of solutions including my own, to the 12X transport case enigma;

I've done extensive research on the JR radios and like the X9303 2.4GHz model! You should checkout [link=http://runryder.com/helicopter/t172571p1/?top=1233156994]this[/link] thread for detailed latency tests between all brands of computer radios. How old is the X9303 2.4?

Zeeb,

Thanks for the feedback - my best solution to date is essentially the same one you are using. I did try the various suggestions for standing the radio vertically but, all of them put more of a load on the antenna than I was comfortable with - unless you cut out the foam at the top. It is certainly a sturdy case, stands out in a crowd, but, the design team decision makers dropped the ball - IMHO. All of that said, it is still a wonderful radio.

The X9303 was available in the US starting Oct./ Nov., 2007 . (Mode 1 availability was Nov.)
