Default My Spektrum Digital Servos GROWL!!!!!

Hi all,

I installed couple of these digital servos and when the battery is connected, these make growling noises. I look through the transparent bodies and nothing is moving. The servos travel just fine but the noises really bother me! Bad servos, binding (I don't think so), bad ESC, bad battery? Please give me your expert responses. Dai Phan

Well, I have no clue. BUT...there are things you can do to check. Disconnect the pushrod from the servo, then check for the noise. That'll tell you if it's binding. For checking the bad ESC/bad battery, take a normal 4.8v or 6.0v (doesn't matter, pick your poison) and plug it into your receiver (without your main flight pack installed) and check for the noise. If it's still doing it, it's probably the servo. If not, you can try a different battery with your esc. If it makes the noise then, it's the ESC. If it doesn't, it's the battery. Make sense? Just change one variable at a time, though.

Are your servo's digital? If so there's your answer. Digital servo's "hum". It is the sound of a digital servo trying to hold center is all if you do in fact have digi servo's. If that is the case then all is normal.

I have Spektrum digital servos installed on my two planes. I find that they make a noise with the tiniest movement of the control sticks-i.e. very sensitive So maybe that is what you are hearing. It does not seem to be a problem and I have not noticed any unusially high battery drain.

Good point you two, I simply assumed that it was above and beyond the standard humming.

It sounded like something is moving and if that's not it, where does the sound come from? DP

Could just be the weight of the control surfaces. Digital servos buzz, thats normal, you just want to make sure they aren't binding or stalled, that will suck a battery dry in a heart beat.

Zero dead band. The servos are constantly "centering".

You mentioned transparent cases so they must be the micros which are programmable. Do you know where they are set??
Also with Spektrum 2.4GHz Tx/Rx the Digital searching noise is all but eliminated except when some external force is placed upon the control surface. \

Earlier 72/75/50/53 MHz sets will result in more noise than the 2.4GHz sets.
The servos I'm speaking about are the JR digitals which I've flown exclusively for the last nine years. I have no first hand experience with the Spektrum branded Micros.

The real question is how do they respond to commands.

These are set on the airelons of my Parkzone T-28 Trojan. The growling sounds stopped as soon as I move the sticks but at rest, they are so noisy that I fear something will go wrong! This is the one (identical to Eflite E-60 servos) DP

Go fly it. The noise at rest is not of much concern.

I do however think you should determine their programming position before you do anything .
