Default Hitec servo hs-81 for aileron duty

I'm putting together a Funster 40 and Funster 20 with floats. Question is: will the Hitec 81 servo be durable enough for aileron servos? It is a mini with 36oz/in. I plan to put a servo on each aileron.

Thanks for any help on this

I am not familiar with these planes but unless they are 1/2 A size or electric I would not use a servo this small. A better choice would be the hitec 225bb or 225mg. The hs 125mg may also work for you. Keep in mind that these servos will have thinner weaker gears than standard size servos eventhough torque ratings may be similar.

I agree. I would suggest the 225 over the 81. I would almost think you could get away with the 85, which is basically a Ball Bearined 81, but I don't think its worth the risk.

It may be OK for the Funster 20 but definetly not the 40.

Your application is better suited for standard size servos, which are much cheaper than HS-81s. For the price of (1) HS-81 ($17.95) you can almost get (2) HS-311s ($8.95)

Per the instructions included with all Hitec servos, and should be with ALL servos. Just because a servo has a torque rating which matches your needs does not make it suitable for your application. The gear train in small servos is not as durable as a larger servo.

The vibration alone from a .40 sized engine can strip the gears of a micro servo let alone the stress of a vibrating control surface being held in place by that tiny servo.

Sooo..... where would you use a servo like the HS-81? Maybe scale features like gear doors or drop tank release?? A friend put some in a 15 size combat plane and they worked fine right up to the point the gears stripped. No impact or crash prior.

Thanks for the advice to everyone. I had come to a conclusion that the 81's gearing may be too fragile. And you are correct....I paid 17.95 and could have purchased 2 of the standard servos for that amount. Well, maybe I can use them in a remote mole trap design.

Thanks again.

I've been using the 85mg and 85bb for throttle servos in my fun fly planes. They seem to work fine for this application. Other than that the only place I would use a servo this small would be an electric or small gas plane.

These servos are great in sail planes, smaller old timers or other applications that do not place much load on the gear train. This includes vibration. Like I said before, small glow engine vibration has been known to strip the gears on micro servos used on the throttle.

I used an HS-81 to control both ailerons on my 4 lb .25 powered Goldberg Skylark 56 using torque rods. The ailerons are only 3/4 inch wide because I had to cut them into the trailing edge of an old plane, but they work well and the HS-81 did fine all summer. Jim

I use the HS-81or the HS-85's for throttle only in my Sig FAZER, Tower UPROAR and my Q-500 VIPER. For all the rest Rudder, Ailerons and Elevator I use the HS-225BB on all surfaces. In all I think in the past few years I striped two servos in all and I am sure it was due to rough flying in FUNFLY events. I do a lot of flying. These servos are great and light weight and work in these plane with good results.

Go for it. You will be fine.

Good Luck

I used four Hs-225 for ailerons in my GP 1/3 Pitts and 5 cell pack. It worked but I did have some stripped gears. If the weight is worth paying for then go with 225's and beware they can be fragile. Otherwise just go with a standard workhorse that will last.
