Default Spectrum AR 7000 dual battery hook-up

Maybe someone out there can answer this question. I am building a giant scale P-51 (Top Flite 1/5 scale) and am planning to install a Spectrum AR7000 receiver, but I want to use two 6.0v batteries. If one goes into the BATT port, where does the other go, AUX2? Or, do I Y-harness them both into the BATT port?
Thanks,
Mark

you can use any free channel with this reciever, if you have no free channels a Y harness could be used. You can use the Y and connect both batteries but is a lot better to use two different channels with two different swithces, just remember use same voltage and if it´s possible same amps

I'm presently using two 5 cell packs wint an AR 9000. You'll need to use one pack in the batt port (this is the one you'll use to bind), and one in an unused port or Y-harnessed port. Use two seperate switches and ONLY CHARGE ONE PACK AT A TIME since they share a common negative through the reciever.
See Red Schofield's website about this.

Hi,
With this setup above, will the reciever draw from the packs evenly?

Hi,
With this setup above, will the reciever draw from the packs evenly?
Since the batts are wired in parallel it's essentially one battery with twice (approx) the capacity.

I run 2 packs and 2 switches on all of my aircraft. Prarie Mike is basically correct about charging one pack at a time
due to their sharing a common ground. HOWEVER, there are chargers out there that allow you to charge multiple packs
at one time through a common ground.

I use a Hughes Spectra 4 and can charge two aircraft (4 packs) at the same time. There are others that can charge via
a common ground also but the Hughes is the one I know and use.

I'm building a 50 cc 27% Extra. What do you guys think about using two Hydramax 2000 6 volt on seperate switches. So 2 batteries, 2 switches and one reciever. (no regulators) Of couse a seperate battery and switch for the ignition. I do not do 3D just basic sport flying. I want to go to the field, get 3 good flights in and have the peace of mind of redundancy. Please advise.
Thanks
Mike

Mike:

I am doing the same things for the same reasons and have been for over 3 years since I had a
single switch fail. Lucky for me it was on the ground when it started to fail. I have NEVER had any
problem running two packs through two switches with no regulator. I use this setup on all of my
gas and glow aircraft.

I also only use heavy duty switches like Max, Ultra Switch, MPI etc. I have junked all of the small
switches that came with radio sets and those that resemble them. Just my thing I guess.

My .05.

Dan,
Thanks for the input. Glad you have had good luck with this setup. Makes me feel I'm on the right track. I built a GS Mustang last year and went the Fromeco route but my brand new $200 Triton was having trouble charging them to full capacity.

If the battery is connected to the Switch Harness and the Switch Harness is connected to the Rx, when you Turn Off the Switch, to charge, the charger is only connected to the Battery. How can that affect the Rx?

It is only when the Switch Harness's are turned On that each battery would be connected to the Rx and share the common ground.

I have used two Rx batteries, each on it's own Switch Harness, and plugged in to the Batt port and a spare channel port and I never had a problem charging both at the same time.

I must not be understanding you correctly.

No he's right, most switches only cut the hot line. Accucycles can't handle the common ground.

Some switches that cut both the hot and ground would work and as he said, not all chargers are bothered by it.

You can charge them at the same time with an accucycle if you physcially break a connection somewhere.

Are you talking about the 3wire Switch Harness that can be used for DSC and for Binding a Spektrum Rx or are you talking about even a simple Two Wire Switch Harness?

I guess I always thought that both the Black and Red wires were disconnected when the Switch is Off.

I'm not sure about the 3 wire switch/binding harness, but 2 wire switches only cut the hot. Bust out a multimeter and give it a try.

I am guessing that I never connected a separate charger to each Switch Harness at the same time. I guess I just used one charger and charged one battery at a time.

What happens if you do that in this situation?

The charger will act like it picked up a peak and shut down almost immediately.
