Default Futaba Question

Hello:

I'm going to buy a Futaba 8uap/8uaf 8 channel radio which is HAM BAND 50.880 Ham band channel #04. Is it a good radio for a new person to hold on to for his entire RC career? Is it enough for any plane that I can throw on it? Any input would be appreciated.....

Are you a licensed HAM operator? If so, then it is a good system.

No I am not but he is selling it for dirt cheap. Should I buy the radio and if so can I modify it so it's NOT ham band just what everyone else is using?

Default Futaba Question

It would be illegal for you to use the radio on ham band without a ham license. You could however change the transmit module in the back for a 72 Mhz one. And that same module would work in a
Futaba 9C. Then again, why not just buy a Futaba 9C with module and be done with it?
Search and you shall find.

Happy hunting.

It isn't a bad radio, but a pain in the butt to program. The 9C is a way better radio. No radio will last your whole RC career, unless you only plan to fly a year.

If you get it, switch it to the 72 band and get the futaba book by Edburg (I think i have that right) to help you program it.

Default Futaba Question

If you are getting it at a good price then buy it, sell the ham frequency module and purchase a module on the frequency that your current planes are on.

Default Thanks....

Thanks for all of the advice:

You all are right, I'm going to go with the Futaba 9CAP 1024 PCM FM TX but what frequency should I get for that radio? I just want something that will last me for a couple of planes, (Maybe four or five) Also how much should I expect to pay for a radio like that?
