Hitec digital servo- stripped gears

Last week, I had a wheel come off the landing gear on my Extra 300. Had to decide whether to land on the runway and rip the gear out, or set it down in the bean field and hope fpr minimal damage.I eased it down in the bean field and had no damage except when it hit the beans, I had full up and they grabbed the counter balance on the elevator and did some damage to the gears on the 7955 mg servo. My question is can I simply buy a set of replacement gears and replace them myself, or am I better off to send the servo back to hitec.
Sorry for the long question.

Hi Dave, Hitec will NOT sell the gear-set for the HS-7955TG. They WILL however replace them if you send the servo in. I have even seen them replace the Titanium Gears for free under certain circumstances. If the only gear that is damaged is the first gear from the motor, which is plastic, it can be purchased. They come in packs of three I think but they are not usually the one that is damaged. If fact out of all the gears I have stripped it has never been the one that does so.

I have had good luck with replacing gears myself. Sometimes the case top also needs to be replaced. It's a pretty straightforward repair. You'll just need a small screwdriver to take out the four corner screws. After you take the top off, look inside the top. I think the 7955 has a small brass bushing to support the top end of one or two of the pins. Make sure you don't lose that. The new gears will only go back in one way, so there's no danger of not being able to figure it out. I pull a small amount of lithium grease on the new gears.

Had something similar happen and just sent the 7955 to Hitec not expecting anything with warranty since the damage was due to a close encouter with tree limbs and I told them what happened. They replaced the primary gear, the one Jezmo hasn't seen damaged.... ;) inspected the servo and returned it no charge. All I paid for was shipping to Hitec.... :)

Sending the Titanium geared servos back is the best way to get them fixed right. As I said in my first post, and it came straight from Hitec, they will not sell the Titanium gear sets. Doesn't make sense to me but that's the way they see it.
