Basically, what they did was this: Take an ARF, and do a controlled crash using a Futaba radio. Who did the show Horizon Hobbies?

50 yards was misspoken, the chase plane was about 1200 feet away. It worked very well and controlled the plane just like a model plane flown on any saturday at the field. They did struggle to keep up in the chase plane was the only real problem. It was performed in a desert in Mexico so not sure there was a hugh risk of disaster as some have claimed here. I for one am happy they perform test such as this. Had you been in the rear of the plane you could have flown your model plane that very day after dusting off. I found the show very interesting except for the lost jumpers did have the reality feel to it.

They built a working R/C system to control the aircraft and you doubt they could get the door open? Geez...;-)
The fix for the door problem involves some highly sophisticated equipment: a screwdriver. You just remove the "Cooper vane" that lines up with the air flow and engages the door latch. Skydiving clubs have been known to charter a 727 for major meets. It's a great jumping airplane because you leave it with instant airspeed; you don't have to wait the several seconds that it normally takes for gravity to accelerate you to a controllable speed. Sometimes, instead of disabling the Cooper vane, they actually remove the swing-down stair entirely. |

You would have to go out that under the tail door. Even so you wouldn't get far down those stairs in that wind. dirty bird- why do you comment on things you really have no idea on.
From your comments you did not watch the show. If you did you don't seem to retain any of the details. They flew the plane for a short distance, straight, and descending to the crash spot Only. They had a Permit from the Mexican government to perform the crash in a number of days. They were many mile from populated area, and not in the flight path. It is a waste of your time and ours.<br type="_moz" /> |
