Its a superhetrodyne receiver that converts the received signal twice. The first time to reject the image frequency, the second time to provide the necessary selectivity.
Its called a hetrodyne receiver because it mixes two signals together. I have no idea where the super came from. |

I do believe the "Super" comes from "super imposed", that is one frequency overlaying another. The superhetrodyne receiver was invented in the thirties and was a vast improvement over the regenerative receiver. Most of the old tube radios from 1930 thru the begining of the transistor age were superhets. They were a five tube set, the more high end had more tubes. But basically the RF signal was superimposed in intermodulation frequency, amplified several times, then detected using a RF oscillator circuit. After detection, there was usually one stage of audio amplification. Today one can do almost all of that on one chip, still need IF's for the dual conversions. The dual conversion gives plenty of rejection. The FM is even better in rejection, ergo, dual conversion FM receivers.
