Tower Hobbies AM reciever question
 

I Have 2 Tower Hobbies 6 channel receivers they are (system 500 AM receivers model No. TSR-6) can anyone tell me if these are legal narrow band AM receivers they are on channel 40 AM

Tower Hobbies System 500 AM receivers are wide-band receivers. They came out just as the then-new frequencies became available. The AMA's phase-in plan had the channels spaced widely-enough apart that wide-band equipment could be used. They would not be able to handle the close spacing we use today. You'd have to make sure that the two channels to either side of your system's channel are not being used when you fly wide-band equipment.

There are no regulations against using those receivers even though they are wide band. I wouldn't use them at a big event or in my favorite plane, but they would be good candidates for rugged models such as EPP slope fliers. They also would work great with a surface model such as an off-road buggy a boat, or better yet, a battle bot (6 channels and all). Just be sure you put a 75MHz xtal in it. I have a number of old Futaba AM 72MHz running on 75MHz and they work great.

Nathan, Do you change both crystals, transmitter and reciever when you use them? If so does the radio need retuning?

If you change the crystal more than 3-4 channels away from your original channel the receiver should be retuned. They were tuned to the channel they were on.

If you change from 72 MHz to 75 MHz, the receiver must be retuned to get any reasonable amount of range.

Your original posting only mentioned receivers. Please note that it's illegal for the user to alter the frequency of their transmitter. Also, transmitters must be retuned after a frequency change. Wide-band transmitters are not allowed to be used per FCC regulation. Please note that wide-band transmitters became illegal to use in 1998.

The Tower Hobbies System 500 transmitters and receivers went out of production just about two decades ago, so they are cetainly obsolete bits of equipment.
