What servo's for 8 ft. Lazy Ace?
Hello
I have a scrath built Chuck Cunningham 8 Ft. Lazy Ace framed up and getting close to radio installation. This is my first large scale gas engine plane. I have Don Apostolico's book " Gas Engines Giant Planes" and he states that even a Pieper J-3 should have 1 to 1 1/2 oz. of servo torque per sq. inch of control surface area. The approx. area's are: rudder-75 sq. in. Elevator-140 sq. in. Aileron 170 sq. in. each Finish weight of aircraft 28 to 30 Lb. I am a Sunday flyer, a few loops and rolls etc not into 3-d. Don's book would indicate a minimum of 170 oz. servo on the ailerons etc. This semms very high and I would appreciate your help on what servo's and battery pack would work out for this aircraft. Thanks for any help. Ron |

If you have doubts, it would be safer to go with Metal Geared servos such as the Hitec 625 or Hitec 225. Both are very durable, and with the metal gears tend to not strip out under heavy loads. They are a bit noisier, but keeping the gears well lubricated will help dampen the noise.

Altacom
Thanks for the concern. I just ordered some 107 oz. metal geared servos from Tower so should be covering in a few weeks and ready for Spring weather. Snow and wind here at this time. Best Ron |

I purchased one of these planes, 8 foot wing span Lazy Ace, RTF last fall. The prior owner flew it many times. I have just one flight on it. If you like I can check the servos and tell you what they are. I do know that it has a 2600 MAH 6 volt battery pack.
I also have the smaller Lazy Ace with a Saito 180. Just love this plane. Let me know if you would like the servo information. bob |
