Airtronics Stylus - PCM or FM

Hi,

I just picked up a used Stylus and was testing it out. It came with an FM TX module on CH 51 and and CH 51 FM DC RX crystal. When I put the xtal in an Airtronics FM RX and set modulation on the TX as PPM everything works fine.

When I change the modulation to PCM, with the same CH 51 TX module and put the CH51 RX xtal in an Airtronics PCM RX, Model 92985, I get nothing! :( :( :( Nothing works. Tried on two PCM RX then tried both RX with an Airtronics Spectrum 7P TX and both RX worked.

What is wrong? I have checked Airtronics web site and they only sell FM TX modules!

HELP!!!

The 92985 receiver can't be used with the Stylus, only the 92085 receiver is compatible.

There is nothing wrong with your Stylus !

The 92985 PCM rx is one of the old model rx's for earlier Airtronics systems and WILL NOT work with the Stylus. The Stulus IS a 1024 system and the 92985 is NOT a 1024 rx. The 92985 rx is the Spectrum rx and is not even "seen" by the Infinity series tx, for example.

The Stylus PCM rx is the 92185. By the way, the FM tx module you speak of for the Stylus also allows the tx to transmit a PCM signal....you select PPM or PCM in yopur transmitter module. This is true with all manufacturers.

Did the manual come with your Stylus ? If so , read the section on page 7; this tells you about the rx requirements.

My mistake, I meant 92185 receiver. And thanks aksmithrc for giving a better explanation than I did.

The 92085 is the 8-channel FM Stylus rx.

Stylus Rx's

So, the Stylus will only talk to a Stylus Rx?
I've got a shoe box of Airtronics Rx's that I use with my Vision and I was thinking of getting a Stylus, but not if all my Rx's are going to be obsolete.

The Stylus will only "talk" to the 1024 PCM rx (not the 92965, 92065, and 92985). On the PPM FM side Stylus tx will "talk" to the PPM FM rx's model # 92745, 92765, 92775, 92785 rx's. I currently still use my 92765's where I don't need more channels and one 92785. The Stylus tx also "talks" to FMA / HITEC rx's, both positive shift or negative shift since it is shift-selectable, which means it would be used used with Futaba PPM FM.

Thanx for the info - all.

At least now I DON'T have to buy the expensive PCM Rx I can stick with the FM ones.

I may have some PCM Rx for sale compatible with Vission, Spectrum and Vanguard.

I just ordered the 50 Model Memory Card from NorthEast Sailplane Products - great prices! Better then from Airtronics direct

There is an additional problem with the 92185 PCM RX. The voltage where the rx shuts down is 4.7 volts rather than 4.1 volts (as all the other rxs made by airtronics) For this reason, 92185 rxs need to be run on 5 cell packs if they are in a plane with high current loads from servos. Airtronics does not easily give this information but I was able to get it out of them after a couple of bench observations under high current loads a couple of years back.

Elson,

Thanx for the insight.

I will probably stick with FM as some other people I have heard from had other things to say about this RX as well.

Like I said to, FM seems to be about 1/2 prce of PCM RX as well :) :)
