Default 3.3 Traxxas into HPI RS4

I've had the RS4 for at least ten years, although I don't think I put a gallon of fuel through the Nitro Star .15 original motor before it lost all compression a month ago. I had a tuned exhaust and 2 speed tranny, and was beginning to have fun with it when the motor went South. A friend long term loaned me a Traxxas 3.3, and apparently, installing it into the RS4 is a do able project. At first glance, it doesn't appear to be a "bolt and run" job due to some of mounting bracket on the engine and drive gear apparatus on the RS4 interfering with one another. That may be due to the one speed clutch bell on the motor and a two speed version on the HPI. It may well be remedied by modifying or fabricating some existing HPI mounts after removing the Traxxas mounts. Anyway, if anyone has done this conversion, any and all advise would be much appreciated.

It's not a had conversion. The main difference between the 2 are the shafts on the motor. HPI has a threaded shaft and Traxxas has SG shaft. You'll need some different mounts to be able to mount the motor. Here's the secret. Use these mounts and you're done. Also, if the 3.3 still has the electric start, take it off and use a pull start. It'll have a better fit.

Thanks GT. It makes sense. Did you use the HPI flywheel and clutch bell on the Traxxas, or...?

Thanks NB 727. I'll check it out. That would make things easier.

Good to hear from you NB, and your timing is down right superf'---ingnatural. Due to a malnourished checkbook, I have spent the last two months finishing a large, well-landscaped, with detailed scenery HO slot car track. Put it on Craigslist on Tuesday and sold it today. The proceeds are earmarked for the conversion and a VTA I'm building to run at Speedworld in Roseville, CA. Haven't touched either of them until an hour ago, and then your email shows up. Very Twilight Zoney. So, the status of the conversion is close to time to plug in the glow ignitor, maybe as soon as this weekend. Since I was so broke I couldn't pay attention, I fabricated/modified the existing Traxxas mount to fit the HPI chassis without too much grief. I kept the clutch bell and its gear off the Traxass, with the only compromise being I took off the two speed transmission, and have the Traxass pinion directly meshing with the HPI Spurgear and shaft. I will let you know if the mesh is a mess or a sync. Thanks for checking in NB. I am glad to be out of the slots and back on track, remotely speaking. Talk to you within the week.

It was donated, or long term loaned, or possibly joint ventured by a friend who was storing his cousin's Jato 3.3. It may only be a coincidence that the offer came after the aforementioned cousin drove my friend's HPI Baja 5 into a rather large lake in the foothills East of Sacramento, in a place made famous by the late Johnny Cash's disgust when he wrote a song about Folsom Prison. 500 yards up the American River from Folsom Prison is the aptly named Folsom Lake wherein the HPI Baja 5 temporarily saw duty as a submarine.
