HPI has set for an early 2005 release the new RS4 Type 18ss kit. Looks to be pretty nice.

I have the rs4 3 ss with os. 18 cv-rx, and i personally think its too much for the car. Too hard to control, its like ultimate drift car if thats what your looking for.

no plans for drifting..no interest either really...
just looking for a parking lot basher that has some extra straight line speed like my old ct4s...for straight line runs...
just like a mustang with 300hp.... don't need it for daily driving.... but when you get a chance to openin it up... watch out...

I had the Epic .18 in my RS4 3 SS for about 4 months, what a blast to drive! Brutal acceleration. I will never have a sackless .12 or .15 again! No need for those terd engines for the parking lot basher. A few tips: Make sure you purchase a std. threaded crank engine, SG shafts wont fit the SS's flywheel. Be gentile with the car when hitting second gear, the heavy torque load placed on the spurs will cause them to strip if you hit a dip or crack and slightly overrev the engine. HAVE GOOD BRAKES!!! As fast as these .18's make an SS go, you need to slow it back down. (mr. curb gets in your way, unbelievably fast, compared to having a .12 engine). Foam tires are a must have if you plan on tapping top speeds of 50+ mph (which is a real good possibility with the .18's). I had Jayco nitro Shoes: 26mm fronts, and 30mm offsets in the rear. You will need 30's IMO, as the .18's massive torque makes the SS handle soo loose in the rear when accelerating out of corners. Good luck,
Rich

RE: hpi rs4-3 type ss w/ a .18 engine
hmm...my type ss with the 12r just came in.... supposedly 1+ hp
ordered a nitro star 18ss a few days later after ordering the ss.... 1.5 hp
however, i see the os 18 tz at 1.9hp rated and 2.3 hp proven.... so was going to get that...and return the 18ss...
but it seems that 1.5 hp is about right and 1.9/2.3 would be too much for the car to take in street bashing runs...
maybe the 18ss, tuned pipe, better brakes and a different spur gear would be all i need...

I just put the o.s. .18cv-rx in my SS. I only ran it enough to break it in but, I can already tell that its gonna RIP. Tower has an unbelieveable price on these engines I only paid $92.00 or $93.00 for it. I'll put up some pics. later.

Very nice Basher, how do you like that engine? Was it a direct replacement and did you use the same engine mounts? I was thinging of putting a .18 O.S. in my car for a while now as well.
Does anyone know if a rear exhaust would fit into the Rs4 ss, cause I know they are more efficient and powerful than side exhausts. Also, can anyone give me a link for a pull starter for this engine?

Thanks a lot.

hey basher8,
this is a dumb question, but how long are your manifold screws. I need longer ones to fit a nut on the end of my header b/c I stripped the screw hole inside the header. I have a nut on mine now, but it loosens up after a few runs, even with threadlock. I think I have a 3 by 30mm screw now and I was looking for something like 3 by 36mm.
Thanks

RE: hpi rs4-3 type ss w/ a .18 engine
I've only run about 10 tanks through it so i'm just starting to lean it out but, so far it's awesome. I used the stock engine mounts from the .12r ss. It is a direct replacement and it will drop right in (you may have to notch out a small area by the rear diff. for pull start. not a big deal). I'm not sure about the rear exhaust. I think the rear shock tower would be in the way.
hey nitro: I think these screws are 3 x 30 mm. You should try some lock nuts, the ones with nylon inserts, and use thread lock with them.

sounds good, but has anyone tried a .21 yet, wolf radicals make the motor mount and it just drops in, but according to you guys the .18 seems to be a screamer.

i'd like to see some pics. of one of the .21 conversions, i bet the power is brutal. I wonder if the added weight of the big block affects the handling a whole lot ? .
I will definitely be ordering the wolf pack 2 speed for my SS because the stock one is weak.
