Default traction compound or no traction compound??

Does traction compound really benefit traction of foam tires? or does it just make a mess? If it does benefit, what are some recommendations? i talked to a guy who mixed his own (turpentine, belt dressing and wintergreen oil) and he swore by it. i have been running at my track w/o using traction compound on my foamies and haven't had a prob. but maybe that is due to a lack of experience
