Unless you have one that opinion really doesn't hold water. I have one (Carson CS-4 actually but identical in every way other than name) and it has been put through some HEAVY use and it is fantastic. Sure I've done some modifications to the engine and I've changed out the wheels and exhaust system, swapped the carb and added new bearings, but I haven't broken a single parts yet and it has done some pretty stellar flips, cartwheels and inadvertant jumps. I've had it slide into a curb at almost full throttle and only scratch the rims.
I think like ANY RC (esspecially the RTR's) there are going to be lemons. Any RTR should get a full going-over before it's run for the fisrt time to make sure that all screws are tight (and in place) and loctited. RTR doesn't mean perfectly setup eother. you still need to do some work there and most people don't and they are surprised when they have problems.
I'm also amazed at how many people I've heard that try to setup their suspensions and tune their engines and they have NEVER read any part of the manual. Should they then be shocked when they have something go wrong?
Any RC when used hard will break\bend parts. I do not care how much you pay for it. I got my car for $65CDN and in retrospect I would happily have paid 3x that for it. It's been that good to me. I have a Kyosho ST that I've had for a few years. It cost me WAY more than the Smartech and has gone through more parts with the same runtime. More $ doesn't always mean better.
Would you rather pay $1000 on a high end racer only to find out that this hobby really isn't for you or would you prefer to spend $150 and get a "starter" and find out that you really like RC and want to get something better?
As for breaking like glass...I've seen all AL T-Maxxes that weigh a ton, have crap handling and have hundreds of dollars in hop-ups (forget the cost of the kit) bend an arm, break a shock tower or bulkhead ot strip a gear because the engine mounts broke on a bad landing. I've even seen a Hyper 7 split in half on landing badly off a very high jump. Sure it couldn't have landed in a worse way, but it still died. Which is the better investment now?
