Default ok HPI Apollo - OS18 advice needed

Since you are the man to ask - you get a thread of your own. LOL

I just picked up a slightly used OS18. It has no exhaust or flywheel or clutch.

Here are my questions.

1. Can I do a straight swap and use my 15fe lightweight flywheel and HPI racing clutch, stock gearing and exhaust from that motor (of course I need mounts, recommend some good ones?) and try that first?

2. You had listed some hop up parts for the 2-speed conversion, echaust, etc in the past... I don't want to mod it out - I want low and mid power and response - not looking for a top speed rocket - can you list all the pieces you think I need, including gearing, exhaust, clutch, flywheel, etc?

Thanks in advance!

well its about time i get my own thread

anyhow, yes the flywheel and racing clutch should be the same as any other as far as i know, rs4 parts are pretty standard, here are some upgrades
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDHM2&P=7
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDHM5&P=7
woops, almost forgot the 2-speed pinion holder http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCLR2&P=7
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCLR7&P=7
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXM617&P=7

that gearing should give you good low end and mid range, since the os doesnt rev so high you should use higher gearing

mounts:
crappy http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXN373&P=ML
nice http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCLR3&P=7

ehaust systems:
http://www.rdlogics.com/cgi-bin/cate...35S&type=store thats a turbo pipe
http://www.rdlogics.com/cgi-bin/cate...230&type=store non turbo pipe
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXCPX4&P=ML non turbo (pretty sure)

hope that helps, off to school [:@]

you might have to get a new flywheel and colet depending on how old your 15fe is. Do you have one with purple head or the grey flat head?

Thanks-

I have a purple head engine, but I put the billett aluminum flywheel with holes in it on it, with an HPI racing clutch and a brass collet.

Is there a 2-speed "kit" or is it better to buy the stuff individually?

Also - can I run it straight up with the single speed that is on my engine now? At least to start with? That way I'd only need a pipe.... unless I can also bolt on the stock HPI manifold and pipe.. can I do that too?

Yes, theres nothing wrong with running it as a single speed. They do make a complete 2 speed and it would be cheaper than buying it all seperate. I would also pick up those other gears apollo was showing you to gear car for more speed

turbo is not race legal, and it gains a litttle more power

associate turbo with more power

another question -

my OS isn't a pull-start type. Is "box-start" my best option now? I have heard box starts are a pain for the RS4 - any truth to that? Also - will the box-start work with a motor with a pull-start as well and can I remove the pull-starter assembly and 1-way bearing too if using box-starter?

how cna it not be a pull start type yet have a pull starter on it?

you are referring to a starter box, to do that you will need a new flywheel, mounts, and of course the starter box along with the backplate, they arent really a pain, but you do have to carry them with you

No apollo- I have an HPI 15fe with a pull start, and my new os is non-pull start.

I was curious if I can use a starter box with both... and what I would need to do that.

i didnt know you could use a starter box with a pull start as josh said

i ahve been told that sometimes you wont need new mounts for the engine to lower it because sometimes the wheels sticks up far enough to grab the flywheel, and other times i have heard you need new mounts and a new flywheel

There are 2 posible set ups you can do. Both will work on a non pullstart engine for a starter box

1... get 20mm pullstart engine mounts and use your pullstart 40mm flywheel

2... get 15mm non pull mounts and also get a non pull flywheel
