hpi racer 2
I have been building a racer 2 piece by piece for the last year and I am about 98% done with it. I was looking at some pictures of the care on the web site and I wanted to know what this part was and do I need it for the car to run correctly.

RE: hpi racer 2
I have a few more questions about this car. I would like to race this car during the summer.
1. how well does this car handle on the on road courses, I know a lot of people use this car for high speed runs but I never hear anyone talk on how they handle.
2. what’s a good .12 engine and pipe combo for this car in the $250 range.

I noticed in that picture that the belt tensioner is upside down. The belt tensioner also acts as a brace between the front and rear portions of the chassis. It also keeps the pulley shafts in line with each other under power. It is a good idea to have on with a high power engine.

RBH261 is correct with what he's saying. I actually dont even use mines to tension the belt, I use it to align the shafts. The bearing part on the brace that tensions the belt is removed on all of my cars. Havent had a problem with slipping belts as of yet.
ZXKNIGHT, check the parts list of the super nitro on the HPI website. The super came with the same part but in plastic so its about 1/4 of the price. If youre not running a high power plant and just want to keep a little tension and alignment, then check out the plastic one. It'll do the job.

I haven't priced .12 engines in quite some time. I have a Novarossi .12 in my Racer 2 with a RB X12 Turbo pipe. It's freakin fast. I hear the O.S. .12TZ is an awesome engine, but I don't know the price. I'm sure someone will chime in with a good suggestion.

you have to find a 12 with a threaded shaft (unless something has changed recently) to be able to fit it on the HPI cars. The only way around that is to use aftermarket mounts such as the ones from wolfpack. I too havent priced any 12s in a while but I do hear that the OFNA red-dot 12 is a very nice motor and its just over 200. The OS 12TZ is also very nice but the speed12 version of it is a little too expensive (IMO). Not sure what kind of running youre going to be doing but you might want to look into an OS 18CVR and an aftermarket pipe to go with it. I dont think that pipe and motor combo will set you back more than 200.

Hmmmm, thats a difficult task achieve with that car, specially since its almost 10 years old and they way that cars have advanced in that time span. Regardless of what plant you'll be running, it'll be hard to run with any Serpent or Mugen on a track with that particular car. The car is a great top end car because of the gearing of the diffs and for that reason, its not a great track car. It just doesnt have the bottom punch that a highend car would have. Then you have some alum parts on there that might have to go due to weigh. Replacing those parts alone might be a task.

well I am going to try it out for a race or 2. to see how it does. For me it’s not all about trying to win the race but the having the fun part. I also just notice something about the can, you can’t adjust the caster on the front tires, that should be lots of fun to find another are that fits so that I can do caster adjustments.

Castor should be adjustable from 8 degree to 10 degrees with diffenrent front hub blocks. The block you have on the car should have 8L/8R or 10L/10R stamped on the top of them.

Hey. If you are club racing, give the Racer 2 a chance. It's a tough little car. Mine has killer power and speed. It has more bottom end than I can use. I may just have the right combination of engine, pipe and gearing. If your driving skills are good enough, you may spank the other guys with a practically vintage car. Wouldn't that be great?

Just remember, you can't buy skill. I have seen some of the worst drivers, at the offroad track, with the best buggy they can buy, but they can't drive. They wonder why more budget minded racers are whipping them. It's funny seeing them scurry around trying to find out what they can do to make their's faster. LOL

That’s what I love about the on road racing speed does not win the race, don’t get me wrong being able to go fast is a good part of racing but if you cant take the turns well speed is worthless.
