Default Got an old 4-Tec 1.5

Hey everyone, somewhere in my garage I have an old Traxxas 4-Tec 1.5 from my younger days. I have been away from the hobby for quite a while and am thinking of getting back into it. I was thinking of ripping apart this old 4-Tec, starting from the beginning and upgrading things. The .15 motor was never broken in properly so it always required tuning etc and was overall sluggish. Are there really any decent upgrades available? Most of the parts are old etc (even the tank spring lid is broken).

Get a new car . There are a lot of people taking out really old cars from their garage and ask this question. The thing is somehow discontinued and if you break something maybe you will not have the chance on fixing it. But anyway, if you want to run it anyway, then take it out and run. I don't think so that you might find parts for it, except if its parts are the same thing as the new 4-TECs. Good luck on hunting parts Oh...try ebay,w ould you

I guess it's time to start saving . Being from NZ, 'tis quite hard to get Nitro cars/trucks in NZ. Parts are just as hard to find unless find the importer. If I were to buy new, I'd probably go for an off-road truck. They just appeal to me more than on-road. Guess it's time to browse the truck section too.

If you go offroad, then go for a buggy. You can lower it if you want and all buggies have a sick looking. I have 2 and they are crazy things . And don't forget that there is a giant scale too buddy. Just do a bit search and find that you like the most In my case, i like them ALL

Can you post a link to a few buggies? I'm not very familiar with them. I was looking at maybe even a ST (The hpi firestorm maybe).

The HPI firestorm is a truggy (barely). For a descent buggy, go for a Hobao Hyper 8.5. But i must tell you this. Now it's not a very good period to buy a buggy since ALL the brands are ready to anounce their new buggies, so the previous models will be more cheaper than now. And because we are out of topic on this forum, go to the 1/8 scale Offroad buggy forum, i'm there too. And one suggestion. DO NOT buy a Losi 8ight, don't hear the others what are telling. The 90% in that forum are USA guys, and Losi is USA brand, so what they will prefer? It has many disadvantages the RTR, AND the KIT. The price is very high for that quality. With the money you give for a Losi you can buy a descent Kyosho competitive car, and we want something cheap for you, right? I think you must wait buying a Hyper 8.5 or Hyper 9 Good luck.

Here some good brands that you can look at them, starting from the best in my opinion:

Kyosho
Mugen
Xray
Hobao (OFNA)
...etc

Yeah but it sucks too, since i've seen it before. That TRX 3.3 is a crap, REALLY CRAP. I recommend not going for Traxxas again. The guys are just funs of top speeds, that's all. They are a bunch of kids in their design factory. Buggy is the best thing for bashing offroad AND onroad (you can lower it if you want, no big deal).

I totally agree about what you said for traxxas. It's "top speed" and nothing more. In order to make a 4-tec corner like its saft driven competitors you have to pay almost half of its price on hop ups. So first check what distributors are avalable in your country. If you want the top buggies and on roads here's the new zealand distributors of HPI and Kyosho.

Cheers for those links, I knew about Hobby Direct but since their site has been down for a good few months I'm not too sure if they are still in business. Will have to send off an email.

Give them a call. That's the best way in my opinion. For on road 1/10 bashers you should prefer HPI. For 1/10 buggies/monster trucks you should prefer HPI. For 1/8 on road and buggies you should prefer Kyosho. For 1/10 racers you should prefer Kyosho.

Well, there is another category that you could choose, the MINI category Ever heard of the Kyosho Mini Inferno or the Losi LST? They are 1/16 scale i think
