de-driftify? possible?

Found a nitro powered HPI at a yard sale for $2! Been out of the rc scene since I was about 14, I am MUCH older now. Is it possible to de-driftify this thing? Could I just get some grippy tires or is this thing geared specifically for drifting? Not sure of the exact model, might need help identifying it.

It's bound to be a nitro RS4 of some kind, and yes, it's perfectly possible to de-driftify. You'll find that the diffs are probably locked, so that's a good place to start (apart from the obvious grip tires which can just be bolted on). Also, if it was setup properly, the suspension will be too stiff for grip driving. You will probably need to change out springs and oil to get any kind of handling out of it.

I probably made it sound more involved than it is. Try to free up the differentials, put a set of grip tires on and take it from there.

Also check the motor for compression. HPI had a nitro car that was specifically made for drifting but the motors didnt last long because it didnt get the proper cooling since you just go around in circles instead of going straight. The HPI car had the motor mounted more towards the middle of the chassis instead of towards the back. But even it its the drift model, it can be converted back to street as Foxy described above.

Yeah, this thing just likes to do doughnuts. The tires are skinny and bald and it seems way overpowered. I'm trying to get used to nitro, I only ever had electric.I dont have enough pavement to really let loose.<div>

You should be able to post pics directly into the forum without a host.
BTW, where in Florida are you located?
