Airport Tug Build
Hello Guys, need your advice and help. I took a regular crawler and rebuilt it into an Airport Tug. I used it to tow smaller rc airplanes around the flying field. However, I now want to upgrade to a larger chassis that I will be able to tow 40+ pound model airplanes on pavement. I was told to start with a 1/10 scale model/chassis. I was also told that the motor size and the torque and gear ratios can be upgraded to provide the extra muscle needed to move the larger models around. HELP Guys, need your thoughts and advice as to available crawlers and upgrades needed. Thank You So Much. Chic

redtail, I'd say start with a 1/10 scale crawler kit, like a Vaterra Ascender or an Axial SCX-10 2. In the kits, you get upgrades that don't come in the RTR's, plus, since you're building them, you can gear down the trans, and diffs, to the speed you want it to perform as a tug. Of course, you'll also have to buy your own electronics, but if you're on 2.4 already for your plane, you may be able to use the same tx for your tug, (not sure how that would work).

Mike Flea - Really appreciate your response. Couple of questions. RTR's (Ready to Run)??????? Can you guide me to where I could find or where I should go to find out what gear or diff I should use? I posted pics of my last Airport Tug here under Rock Crawlers, under the Thread: Post Pics of Your Crawlers, Post 20. Again, thanks for the help. Chic

Could also look into the 1/14 tamiya truck line or CrossRC trucks. Lots of parts and mods available and they are meant to tow. I have a Tamiya King hauler and pull a 45lb excavator on a dropdeck with it. Definitely more cash to get into one but built for the job.

Thanks for chiming in Benny, I forgot about the Tamiya and Cross RC trucks
Ya redtail, RTR is for Ready To Run, TheBennyB or RustedRC might be able to help you find the right gearing for what you want, the other forums to check for lower gearing if you can't find the info here would be rccrawler.com or thercgarage.net
I see you've posted at RCCrawler already, somebody there might be able to help out
