Hello gents/ladies please excuse my rude interruption, I have been lurking for a looong time using the many forums to build up my knowledge of our RC vehicles. Over the years i have helped hundreds of our fellow RC'ers solve their issues and get back to what we enjoy the most. I am interested in all aspects of our hobby and i fly/drive anything from boats and cars to quads, helis and planes, i mainly fly FPV simply because it brings a bit more "depth" to the whole RC experience and lets me see the world in a different way . The one thing that i am interested in and like to give back is information and so i thought i would introduce myself by offering my pet project as an insight to "me"
Normally i buy all my own products and i provide a link to were i bought it from , using the link will cost you nothing but it will in a small way allow me to help us all to avoid the many "duds" or crappy products out there , in other words it will help us find out if a product is worth the money or a pile of crap, i know this is looked down upon by some but to me it helps everybody save money especially those of us with very limited wallets (me )were buying a "dud" can mean weeks or months worth of savings are thrown down the drain, "behind the scenes" i am constantly petitioning manufacturers and vendors with the suggestions that i get from the RC community and whilst the factories are usually more interested in churning out the same ol' same ol' now and again we gain a win and the vendor/manufacturer will change their product to incorporate our suggestions . Normally i would pop up offering help and information were ever possible but my usual stomping ground is quickly turning into a war zone and so whilst i still have my dignity i am moving on which brings me to here.
The Remo is my pet project , i have spent literally hours ( nearly a month ) getting this how i want it and i am now one step away from completion . The Remo itself is really quite a nice crawler , the chassis is strong and flexible but the body let it down massively. The body is one of the generic "coke bottle" type plastic shells which are sometimes passable but this one lacked ANY detail and it just didnt suit the chassis underneath and so i began the Upgrade process . I wanted a good quality scale body that matched the chassis in terms of quality but also brought the model into the 21st century. Luckily i found one that was really cheap and imo it is ridiculous that this wasnt used as standard.......................................... .

The 1073-SJ is a 1/10 scale Rock Crawler from manufacturer REMO. If there was one thing that best describes this new beast it is that THIS THING IS HUGE !. Despite its huge size the 1073 runs on a relatively cheap 2500 mah 7.4v NiMH pack. The receiver has optional jumpers for utilizing a LiPo battery although that too is limited to 2S 7.4v..... For now. However don't let that fool you the 1073 packs some serious torque in its drive train and its long wheelbase and huge tyres mean it covers ground with ease.

As with every review it start with a box and this was a big box.

Packed nicely in side is the 1073. It is a semi scale land rover type vac formed body ontop of a pre built 4 WD chassis. With some additional parts this can be converted to 4wd and 4 wheel steering

A quick look at the internals shows a central brushed 550 motor coupled with a sealed gearbox. The gear box then transfers power along a front and rear drive shaft that uses a universal joint which allows greater flexibility with the Rock Crawlers main chassis . The drive shaft will also move slightly along its length giving a wide variety of articulation and movement.

The motor is a huge 20t 550 sized brushed motor.

The control unit combines the brushed ESC and Remo receiver, there are jumpers for setting battery type and an extra socket for another servo if you wish to convert it to all wheel steering

On the underside of the chassis sits the front and rear drive shafts. These are connected to the main gearbox via universal joints. The shafts them selves are plastic and will float becoming shorter or longer as the vehicle moves over objects. The drive shafts terminate in differentials giving even more control over the vehicles movements.

Steering is provided by a metal geared servo, this is connected to the steering mechanism by two aluminium steering linkages.

The rear of the 1073 is near identical to the front albeit missing the steering linkages and servo, however, these parts can be purchased as accessories and fitted to the back end give 4WD and 4 wheel steering. The socket is already pre molded for a rear servo, Remo know their customer base quite well.

The Instruction manual is more of a build manual and is incredibly detailed, it is actually one of the most comprehensive references I have seen on a model of this type.

Like the instruction manual the replacement part booklet is full of details and photographs, the amount of detail included in the literature was impressive.

The handset is a typical pistol grip style transmitter that can be switch for left or right handed use it requires the standard 4xAA batteries which are not included in the package.

A simple on/off switch and 2 led indicators denote whether the tx is turned on. There is a secondary switch on the front of the transmitter that controls the dual rates.

On top under the protective lid lay the dials controlling the various trim functions and the dual rates setting there is also a light switch which I assume is for after market upgrades.

On the very top underneath the handle is a switch that flicks between left or right hand control. With left hand mode the wheel on the back side of the transmitter will pop out.

The accessory and tool pack is quite bare consisting of a few minor tools and some Allen keys. The decorative accessories are a simple set of non functional mounted plastic fake lights and a simple sticker set

Front (and rear ) differentials , the outer casing is a molded ABS type plastic and whilst solid has a small amount of flex which suits the chassis type, something stiff would no doubt be prone to cracking as the vehicle moves up and over obstacles. The main shafts and the gearing are metal and the parts look molded or pressed rather than CNC cut but at this level of power i dont think it will make much difference. I am glad as i wont have to mess around replacing spider gears every time i smash the truck into a wall

Default Remo

Nice build.. I just picked up my first RC crawler..Remo 1093. Love your tire upgrade.. I would love to get a little more speed, but body and shocks first
