RE: best crawler out there
All of these trucks look too top heavy.
Is articulation really that importanat?
I went "rock crawling" the other day with my E-Maxx by a river bed. There were big piles of sizeable rocks. There were some guys there, one had a T-Maxx and was just buzzing around spitting up dust, and the other guy had a clod buster...all decked out with almunium with so much articulation that you could practically spin his axles like helicopter blades.
Anyway...he was having a hard time getting up the rock piles because a) he kept scraping his axles and getting high centered and b) he kept flipping over and rolling down the rocks because the truck was so high.
My E-Maxx kept flipping over backwards too until I lowered it at a bit by removing the shock clips, then it was able to climb to the top. My E-Max is 100% stock.
What is my point? I'm not trying to say the E-Maxx is a great rock crawler... it's not...at least not in stock form. But all of these super articulating 9 foot high monsters don't seem that great either.
My E-Max had much more ground clearance than this clod buster and had a lower center of gravity. While it's true that the E-Maxx's power had something to do with it getting to the top, a stinking purpose built rock crawler with locked diffs (mine are open) should have done better...but it didn't.
Why not?
Why build all these top-heavy bad ground clearance crawlers if they are not going to crawl?
I don't get it.
Maybe the clod's driver sucked, but then this is my first RC truck and it was my second day of driving it. What gives?

Thats a good opinion, I have 2 E maxx's and they are a blast and can climb pretty darn good but I cant get mine to crawl like my clods can. But hey that is my opinion.

RE: best crawler out there
not all clods are built to be crawlers, I have mine set up for general bashing so I can go from a triple to the rocks. Most serious crawlers don't have there trucks decked out with aluminum a mater of fact most of the best crawlers have some of the ugly est trucks you will ever see.Another thing is most People tend to mount there battery high on there chassis for easy access since the battery is the heavies thing on the truck that does not work for crawling.

RE: best crawler out there
I guess that makes sense.
Stock E-Maxxs make terrible crawlers because the speed control goes from zero to a pretty brisk speed with nothing in between. You can't creep forward like you can with most speed controllers. I suppose with a really small pinion you could remedy that, but it would still be an instant on effect.
However, the maxx has so much torque (it can pull my daughter in her toy car and push full garbage cans around the street) that it can hop and jump and run over most rock piles. Still, that's not really crawling.

RE: BEST CRAWLERS OUT THERE
In response to Mike01, your E-Maxx flies up stuff because of its power. The guy with the clod prolly didn't know what he was doing when he built that thing. In full sized rock crawling articulation is all that matters. They know that they have to keep as much tire in contact as possible. In the R/C world this is a fairly young area and these guys are having to fabercate most of what they use. As time goes on these guys will only get better at this and we will see much better rock crawlers very soon I'm guessing.

T28 -
Tell me about the first two shots (the hummer and the next one) plus about the burgundy Cherokee (the last one)
I'm looking to start building a crawler and any info you could provide wouldbe great. Also, where are you/they getting the scale bodies?

tj8 you might want to give credit to the owners of those trucks
A good crawler can cost as much as a set of axles and the matierial you use up to about $2000
