RE: OFFICIAL WHEELY KING CRAWLER THREAD
Well today is Monday, and I went to the LHS and got the RTR Wheely King. $209 out the door and he threw in an extra 3000MaH battery for $12.

RE: OFFICIAL WHEELY KING CRAWLER THREAD
Shim the diffs. I put a washer between the two input shaft (on the inside bearing) bearings on the axles to take the slop out. I'm running a traxxas 12T and XL-5 ESC and it ate the front diff a lil bit. The gear doesn't sit in enought towards the bevel gear. I purchased HD gears for the locked rear. I haven't heard the "slipper" click once and my ESC tripped and went into reverse while moving forward and it stopped with the two rear wheels in the air. Thats gotta be hard on the tranny but I never hear the slipper click and I ended up with a bit of a chewed front diff. I could hear it. Upon examination I could see that it need to be shimmed.
They are tough, but they are built like a rubbbermaid trash can-flexible. I'm still working on mine. Almost finished. Poured about $300 into it. Its a basher/crawler. More basher than crawler.

RE: OFFICIAL WHEELY KING CRAWLER THREAD
Well, the 4 yr old fell in love with it. I charged it and let him rip around with it a bit. I then took it out to the bench to tinker with it a bit. It sure looks tiny next to my Savage, Tmaxx and especially my Wolverine. Anyway, I did notice something strange. When I picked up the rear end leaving the front tires on the bench, it would spin the rear tires, but wouldn't pull with the fronts. The drive shaft was spinning to the front, and with good force as I tried to stop it. So the front drive shaft was spinning into the front diff but not pulling. Is this normal? Is there a slipper in there? When shut off and turning the front drive shaft by hand it seems positive. There is no skipping or stripping gear sounds. Maybe a speed sensitive lock out clutch mechanism?
I took off the rear truss and really freed up the suspension travel.
I also ended up finding some old NiCd packs that I had from a car and a boat I had years ago that I must have stored away correctly as they took a charge and worked well. Neither one is marked with a MaH rating so that remains a bit of a mystery. The boy should have an hour or better runtime now with the 1500, 2400 and the 2 mystery packs. That should keep him entertained when his older brother and I are burning up Nitro.

RE: OFFICIAL WHEELY KING CRAWLER THREAD
Mine seems locked up. Front and back drive lines tied together. I've torn mine apart and the only slipper is a spring in between two gears. I couldn't get it to work by hand. Its tight. Its a spring between the two gears in the center of the trans. The spring hold or pushes two cams together or something. I believe it works like a saw tooth. I've hear it click on an older one with a 9 turn double. Gasing or breaking it hard would make the noise.
I read yours again and thats not right. The diffs are very primitive. Look at the parts list for it on tower and' you'll see the diff gears. Theres nothing special in the axles. Its a simple open diff. With the fact that the slipper seems non existant, it would be not a good itdea to lock the diffs if you bash at all. Thats why I went and got HD gears. If yours seems to be transfering power front to back then maybe thats a good thing. At least for bashing. Not for crawling. For as little as I have done I shouldn't have chewed a gear already.

RE: OFFICIAL WHEELY KING CRAWLER THREAD
Dude,
Careful moding this to much roght now. I know temptation is killing you. The stock Wheely King will handle much abuse/bashing from your 4 year old. When you took the rear cross brace off you probably noticed the wheelies not like they were. My reccommendation is to put the rear brace back on and let him bash the heck out of it. The brace is going to keep the parts, ie drives seated better. The diffs have a limited slip clutch in them, which you have probably noticed. I locked mine with good ol' JB Weld. Reverse your front tires and it will have a better bite up front. Check out HPI's web site on Wheely King Rock Crawler Conversion pretty cool. But for a 4 year old try leaving it stock it will last a lot longer. You can upgrade battery, motor, esc, etccc........ Glad he likes it now your going to have to post some picks with his pride and joy.

RE: OFFICIAL WHEELY KING CRAWLER THREAD
I think he means limited slip, which its not really that either. Its an limited slip still acts more like positraction or a locker than an open diff. I would say it would be more of a limited slip if it was a tighten ball diff or has a heavy weight silcone lube in it. Its just an open diff just like the E-savage or E-revo. Just a simple diff like a older pickup. I consider it a down side since you can't set the slipper and locking the diffs will make it even more prone to strip gears especailly when landing while on the throttle. If this thing didn't have some what of a slipper it would be the same as ownig a 1990s Tamiya. A 4w4 version on the Extreme Blackfoot. Better yet its the Detonator. Open diffs and no slipper. As a basher and rock racer I still perfer this over the Axial since it has a gear cover. There is an optional slipper for Axial but no gear cover.

HPI HD diff gears work but the CV driveline will probably need to be modded to fit on the input shaft of the axle. I had to do a quick mod, but I'm also using Traxxas CV Axles that are thicker. They are for the Revo or something. I'll post pics as soon as I get my shocks on.

RE: OFFICIAL WHEELY KING CRAWLER THREAD
So I see in the Wheely King manual that it say to use no less than a 20 turn motor. I have a real nice 19 turn motor that I would like to try, so what is going to happen? I really don't want to buy a new ESC just to try it.

The motor I have to try in it is a Great Planes Electrifly 19T that is $16.99 form Tower. It looks a bit longer, so I will have to do some minor modding to get it in there.

I actually use a traxxas front arm with steering turnbuckle and two servos one to lift and lower and the other one to turn the plow left n right[8D]

RE: OFFICIAL WHEELY KING CRAWLER THREAD
After hearing too many people say that Wheely Kings don't work for scalers.
Here is my build to prove them wrong....
WK axles narrowed 1 1/4" - Custom PVC rear straight axle adapter
WK trans w/ clocked motor plate - Maxx shafts
Custom chassis & tube work (solid rod, silver soldered)
'34 Ford body - cut just a little bit
Soon to be waterproofed for my clubs scale runs....
Think I proved them wrong?
It crawls great even for a scale rig. More scale goodies to be added
Some build pics
Helluva long way from this....
This is the first set of WK axles I have messed with and I have to say that this driveline is bulletproof.
I think I might have to score another set to mess with...

RE: OFFICIAL WHEELY KING CRAWLER THREAD
So I tried this new motor out in my 4 yr old son's Wheely King:
[link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0095P?FVSEARCH=GPMG0710&search=Go]Good Cheap Motor[/link]
It works real well! It definitely has a bunch more power and great bang for the buck. I left the gearing stock, but I'm sure it will pull a much bigger gear than the stock motor. I was tipped on to these motors when I was working on a couple of Emaxx's for a friend of mine.
This little Wheely King has sure been a lot of fun, everything else I have is Nitro powered but nitro would be a bit much for the 4 yr old so the Wheely King it was. Sure is nice not having to wrench much, just drop in a battery and go. He now wants a '34 Ford just like the one Jmz6 has posted. That is way cool I must say.

RE: OFFICIAL WHEELY KING CRAWLER THREAD
Hey guys, I'm new to the crawler scene (always lurked around it...brother has a WK hes building) so I have a King on the way and want a new body....My Q is, what body's fit the King? Is there any good links to some bodies? I had seen on the HPI site that some bodies fit the ESavage and the King...is that true for Nitro too? Sorry if this had been covered, I looked thru almost every post on this King, but got tired so I dont know if I looked over it or not LOL. Thanks guys-

If you have chronological pictures, maybe you can put together a build thread? Lol, too much work?

RE: OFFICIAL WHEELY KING CRAWLER THREAD
Zim,
Try to use JB WELD to lock the diff's. I used the miracle putty and it broke loose. There is a lot of torque at the axle. I used JB WELD the second time and applied it with a toothpick and it has not broken yet and I went with a high torque Infinity Crawler motor and different gears as well. I used it to pull coaxial cable under my deck that is about 60' long because the Direct Tv guy did not want to crawl under the deck. The truck had enough torque to pull a double Coaxial cable right off the reel. Way Cool. I am now building a Tamiya Scale Trail truck with a Defender D90 body. Way cool. The picture below is what can be done with this set up. However I am keeping my Wheely King for Crawling.......... Good Luck.

I have used JB Weld on other diff's with good results, but these axles have the aluminum lockers in them.
I will post up a build thread if that will help.
