i have a xl-5 esc with the titan 12turn 550 motor, i was hoping to use this. what gearing should i use to get good torque and decent speed? i ordered it friday of last week it will come in tomorrow so i would like to know before i go pick it up. also the servo i got is a metal gear 145oz will this give me good steering torque? i cant wait till this little thing comes in i sold my emaxx 3905 to get it, lol.

I've never ran that system but did put the VXL in mine at first. As long as you gear down you should be fine for awhile but think its going to cog and studder trying to go slow. Really should pick up a high turn motor.
Servo will work fine for scale truck..
Have fun man, it's the best truck I've owned..

the xl-5 doesn't have progamable drag brake. with the price drops online get a tekin fxr and bag it for waterproofing and have it all- that is fun.

the xl5 is fine for trail trucking but the titan 550 is a bit too much amp draw for that esc. I would sugest picking up a 20 dollar 35 or 45 turn crawler motor. if speed is what you want then you can go up to a 12 turn 540 motor but not a 550.

Stock XL-5 pinion is what a 18t??
I would start out with a low pinion and go from there. But I know with a VXL geared low it still cogged but did do good for slower driving.. I would say try a 12T IMO.
Good luck and have a blast.

I've been running the XL-5 with a 27T stock motor (similar to a Titan) for awhile now. The lack of drag brake is inconvenient, but it has been a reliable setup with some decent wheelspeed. I'm running a 12T pinion and the torque is adequate. It's not a stump-puller but it's good enough for bashing around and light rock crawling.

My AX10 is running this combo. I can run everything from a 13T to 18T pinion and it's flawless. I stepped up to 21T once to try to pick up a little more speed and the motor cogged a little because it was turning so slow. Dropping back to the 18T pinion solved the problem.
The 550 has motor than enough torque to do whatever you want. On 2S 5000's I get 90 mins of run time before the alarm goes off and even on 90+F days the motor and ESC are just above air temp. The max I've ever seen was 110F.
The 12T Titan is comparable to about a 19T 540 sized motor so you're more than safe on the ESC.
frizzlefry99 - I think you've been give some bad info on motor turn ratings or the difference between 540, 550, 600 motors etc.
