What's a good first crawler for a 7 year old?

My son would like a rock crawler for his birthday. I think they look like fun but I know nothing about crawlers, I have RC tanks. He likes monster trucks but is not looking for a scaler, just a fun, easy to run, go anywhere truck. I want it to be elect. and the 7.2v Tamiya set-up is what I run my tanks with so it would be a plus to match that.

What is a good brand / model of a crawler in the smaller scales? He thinks 1/10 is too big.

I'm looking to spend about $100

Thanks for any help...
$100 won't get you far as far as crawlers. you could take a chance with an off brand, buy something smaller, or spend a bit more.
Check out Losi's mini and micro crawlers. Try and see if he prefers the "comp crawlers"(Losi Night Crawler) or "monster trucks"(Axial Wraith) etc. The new axial AX10 ridgecrest may also be a good choice.

I have been researching and I think a Traxxas 1/16 summit # 7205 looks fun.

Is it any good?

You would be better of getting the 1/10 version of the Summitt. The mini's are fun but are limited to where you can run them due to their size.

And the summit is somewhat overpriced. a solid axle car will be a much better crawler.

RE: What's a good first crawler for a 7 year old?

I agree.

He likes the smaller trucks and it is his birthday so the smaller scale is what I'm shopping for now... later we can upgrade.

This will be our first venture into non-tracked RC so we have a lot to learn.

I like the Traxxas waterproof electronics, I KNOW he will drive it in mud/water/snow.
Is he more interested in mini's or micros?

Minis

Does the Losi mini have waterproof electronics?

RE: What's a good first crawler for a 7 year old?

No, but you can waterproof crawlers fairly easily (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzmK_tvbejE)
Or, buy a roller of whatever car he likes most and transplant Traxxas electronics.
The AX10 Ridgecrest looks like a lot of fun, good crawler, mini sized, water resistant, solid axle, however it is around $300. :p

The 1/16th Summit is ok, but like it was already said a little over priced, but none the less for a 7 year old it is perfect, the parts are pretty durable and they can go a lot of places and even though they are "waterproof" don't submerge it like a submarine lol that scenario always has a bad outcome.

Check out the Redcat Racing 1/24 for indoor micro crawling. All parts are replaceable and available from their site. The coolest thing, are the steering modes you switch from the TX, check out
the vids on the bottom of the page. Runs on AA's which means no charge time and you get about a 20 min run time.

I'm also a tanker and have combined the two hobbies with a product from RC4WD.com on my Axial Honcho. Again scroll down to see the vids.

the 1/16th summit is not a crawler in the least.
with what traxxas put in it the sucker will wheelie like there's no tomorrow. IMO they should have just named it the mini pede 4X4 seeing its not a trail truck like the full sized summit is. Only thing it shares with the summit is its based off a revo chassis, the body/tires looks, and the name.

Might want to look at the HPI Wheely king IMO it is decent, and if you swap in a higher turned motor(45+ turns) can do a semi decent job crawling. Its 1/12th (now water proof), and is a llittle over $200 RTR

They look cool and the size is what he is looking for... but the AAA batt. worries me, with all his other toys I go through a fortune in AAA batt as it is.

A rechargeable batt in a plus for me, I can always buy more batt to keep driving.

Thanks guys for the advice. I'm learning a lot.

I've checked them all out and the Losi mini 1/24 looks like it will work. Now where to buy one. I live FAR from stores so online is my only choise, what's a good vendor for these things?

RE: What's a good first crawler for a 7 year old?

There is also a Micro Trail Trekker version if you prefer it. As far as where to buy it, they are fairly common, so it could be pretty easy to get one used. New, I can't really find a price below $150 but I didn't look too much. Anything around that price should be fine.

I've looked some more and I kind'a like the Losi 1/18 scale crawler... found one for $239. The wife/mom unit thinks the bigger model will be a hit. I like the bigger scale too.

Well If comp crawlers are what he likes. I actually just got one shipped out to me today! Through a trade, nonetheless.

It's a HPI Crawler King.

I have no idea what the scale is.

yea, looked it up. At first, thought it was a 1/18 but think it's closer to 1/12 since it has 2.2 tires and you can use larger bodies on it as replacements.
Nice looking area to get some dirt on those tires!!
