I know this is 'nit-picking', but I wonder at what point you have to license a boat? I'm not sure what the requirement is, size or passengers? I don't think it's strictly 'size' dependent, so it probably depends on if it can carry passengers, at least here in Oklahoma. I'd also like to see the look on the DPM clerk's face if/when you tried to register a model boat...

I do recall seeing a model of a tugboat that was 10-12' I think. It was big enough to carry the owner. He sat in it and drove it with the radio. He was told by the dnr, sheriff or someone that he had to be liscened to operate it. He was trying to sell it. Very cool it was. Not sure what the rules may be from state to state.

Hey HogHappy -
Great ship!
I love your signature line - have you read all the books? I'm reading "The Commodore" now. Please stop in at WindPower sometime if you haven't yet.

Mary J. Ward ?
Just finished my first airboat but I'm a sailboater from the start. Our pond is so full of weeds during the summer that an airboat seems to be the only solution. I've had Soling 1M's and a Fairwind. The Solings were of course from Victor who makes very good kits. I've seen the Mary J. Ward on the Victor website and am interested in her as a start into multi-mast sailing. Has anyone built this yacht? Is the kit as good as the rest of the Victor products? My garage is full of airplanes at the moment but just one more and it's time for multi-mast building.

If you got weeds, you need full keel boats, i.e. like the J or EC12. Our pond has a serious millform problem, and the only thing that can sail in it if the weeds aren't treated by sunblock are 12's and J's. Thoes fin keel boats just snag and become "marks" on the course.
Which makes me much more competitve[sm=lol.gif]
Chris
P.S. How many winch servos does that boat take? Must be hell on batteries.

Ballgunner...Mary J Ward is a way cool ship. I was all set to buy the kit then stumbled on the Prince. I got the "got to have bug" and decided to get her instead. I still plan to get the MJW sometime down the road. There is a MJW group at Yahoo: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mjwschooner/ and a good build site at the bottom of this page: http://www.amya.org/schooners.html
BTW...I used to build and fly too. I got tired of crashing my beautiful planes and decided to give the sails a try. I like it so far....just wish I had someone around here to play with.
Hope you get one and join the fleet.

MyWay, you seem to be resigned to not finishing the Sovereign so I think you owe it to the hobby to sell it to someone who will. What you've done so far is incredible and I'm sure anyone who finished it would be proud to put your name down as "CoBuilder".

Here is a pic of the Sovereign of the Seas. This ship was started 15 years ago and will never be completed. It was built to a scale of 1/33 using plans that were out of scale. What a waste of time this was.

my way, it sure seems a shame to quite on such a beautiful boat, by the look at the photo you've done most of the hard work. Don't quite now! I know that's easy for me to say with an unfinished destroyer on my workbench but a work of art like that should not be allowed to set dormant. Good luck on whatever you do with it.

One more time ...and BTW...I now have a commercial free website www.princedeneufchatel.com dedicated to the ship I built. I am also in the process of adding more detail to it.

I have never posted in the "Boats" section before. ( Model Acft. builder)I have started building a two masted schooner form plans and I am in need of an on line source for small parts like wheel, deadeye's,chain and such. Any suggestions?

Depending on the scale...some stuff is real hard to find.
Below are 2 of the sources I use a lot. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Thanks for the info. My project is 1:24 scale . I found what I need at Modelexpo. While looking on their site I saw an articulated keel clamp to hold the project upright or at any angle. Looked like it may be usefull so I made one. Took scrap wood and 6 carrage bolts and wing nuts to make. About an hours time to finish. I saw their "planking clamps" in there too. I think I will make some of those too. Always looking for something to make.

Here is a photo of the two masted topsail schooner I am working on. This is my first attempt at model ship building. (for display only) I am making it of balsa from plans. (Not a kit). I have made ropes for it and I am ready to install them now. THe hull is planked but the deck is scored to replicate planking.
