Please recommend a magazine
Would someone please recommend a magazine [publication] for model yacht builders / racers in the United Kingdom. I live near Poole in Dorset on the South Coast, there is an active model yacht club at the local park.
Untill I retired last year I owned my own full sized yacht which I raced quite successfully for a good number of years, however for health and economic reasons I have been obliged to sell her, but I will admit that I miss the challenge of competition and wondered if perhaps model racing would fill this gap.
My background is in electronics, and I have dabbled with radio-controlled planes and cars over the years. So perhaps if one of you would care to recommend a magazine [published in the UK] that you have found to be interesting and informative, I would be most grateful.

RE: Please recommend a magazine
Thanks for recommending Marine Modeling International, I purchased the February issue, it was a very interesting read but unfortunately not what I was looking for. My interest is solely in model sailing yachts, the magazine as recommended does not seem to be orientated in that direction ie only one feature about the Nimbus Mk 3
Perhaps someone would like to try again, the magazine that I am looking for will contain information about building and racing model yachts also info about clubs, race results etc all in the United Kingdom.

There isn't a magazine that I know of that is solely for sailing. MMI does have a lot of sailboat coverage in it, more than what you'd find in RCBM. Sailing is one of the smallest parts of R/C boating. There just isn't enough interest to warrant a publication for it unless someone like AMYA has something for their members.

Thanks for your input Ron, must admit that I am a little surprised and disappointed that there is no specialist mag aimed at model yacht racing enthusiasts. However you will no doubt have noticed that our RCU contributor Wismerhell from Japan has recommended a site http://www.myrc.org this being the home page for Model Yachting Resource Centre. I have found it to be a site absolutely full of all the information that anyone could posibly want in regard to model yachting, and I in turn would recommend it to all.
Once again, thank you all for your interest.
John.

Yes, magazines can be a disappointment. My learning curve went up big time once I got a computer. There is so much more info available online that what you'll find in a truckload of magazines.
R/C sailing seems to be bigger over on the other side of the pond than it is here in the States. Most Hobby Shops here don't even carry sailboats and I haven't seen one on the water here.
Want to see a big surprise? I thought that Electric boats were big according to all of the articles on them in magazines. I decided to take a 60 mile drive to a "National" event race to see how they do it. What got me is that there were less people there than what we have at a District Nitro race!

So you are into Nitro Ron, I don’t think that you would like it in this neck of the woods, the authorities have banned them from the lake, complaints about the noise don’t you know! Also the car track right out in the country are only allowed to run electric now, it seems a shame but the kids have no “voice” and are easy to persecute it only takes a few complaints to the local council.
Thankfully at my time of life quite peaceful sail boating appeals, so I have no problems and yes you are right the hobby is very popular particularly here in the South.

I do have to consider myself lucky where I live. We have 3 R/C car tracks within 20 minutes of my house, a County Park that has a flying field right down the road, another one has a pond for the scale ship crowd that has held National events there. The City Parks and Recreation Dept. has approached myself and others about what they could do to help us get a boat race here. Yes, they asked us! We have held Fun Runs here the past 2 years and they were very helpful to help me put these events on.
Yes, I'm into Nitro but love it all. I did Electric before the move but also flown planes and raced cars and trucks, on and off-road.
The same people that complain about the "noisy" boats are probably the same ones with noisy weedwackers, chainsaws and lawnmowers. Some people just have to have something to gripe about.

Hi John, though I realize that you are across the 'pond' I would suggest that you visit www.amya.org site, this is the American Model Yacht Association's site and they do have a magazine that you can subscribe to. They also have links on their site to various other associations which I am sure you will need to join the one in your own country in order to get a racing number. With that contact I am sure that the association will point you to racing fleets near to you. Having said that your own UK association may have their own magazine as well. Hope this helps.
