Default Seawind Q`s

Hi Guys.

I would like to buy the seawind for my first sailing boat.
I have a few questions for you guys.....

What exactly does the sail servo do ?
I think I read that you can sail the boat without this servo ?

After reading a bit, ill do these mods:

Modify the hatch to be more waterproof.

Strengthen inside the hull at the keel so I wont get stress cracks....and maybe at the rudder too.

Move the reciever battery further aft for better tracking and not have the nose submerge so much.

Maybe also lower the jib if it is not too difficult. This should also prevent the boat from submerging , and decreases the downward force on the narrow low profile bow by the jib.

Im defiantly going to but a sail servo for it......must be good for something

Thanks, Sonnich.

You will be satisfied, the SW is a great boat...worth every penny, that said,
the sail servo controls the sails...yes you could sail the SW without it...but, well, it might be over boring LOL

Kyosho recommends Futaba, so do I...some people use Hitec's

Waterproof hatch is a must be!
The rudder is ok...re-inforce the rudder post
keel post....around the keel post epoxy or stabilit

I canted my bulb @ 4 degrees and put the batt aft of the servo tray...now only 2 degrees...works great

lower the jib...well that s a must be....I have tons of cheap mods...mail me for pics or check my webpage

Cheers and welcome aboard the SW international fleet....check this www.seawindrc.com

Cheers

Sonnich,
The sail servo draws in, and lets out a line which controls the angle the sail makes with the boat. A single position sail will work, in most cases, but not very well. Being able to change the angle of the sail with the boat is, in affect, your 'gas pedal'. (Not the best analogy in the world, but the only one I can think of at the moment.) Having a fixed sail also means that you can only go in one general direction (sort of) unless the wind changes. Sail servos are very 'nice' things to have, makes it easier to ~not~ sail off into the sunset and never come back...
Another general statement is that the bigger the sail servo, the more control you have over your boat. That 'bigger is better' thingy can get totally ridiculous fairly quick, so you have to use some judgement there. Since I don't know anything about your particular boat, I won't try to tell you what 'size' servo to use. Besides, there are lots of people who ~do~ know about the 'Seawind' and that can tell you anything you'll want to know. Have fun...

Thanks wismerhell, you site is very informative [8D]

Thanks for the info about the sail Doc. But doesn`t the wind just blow the sail to either side of the boat by itself ?

Ahh...now I think I know what you mean Doc.

I have windsurfed a few times..... totaly novice...

I gusse that the servo rould work like when you use your body weight to "pull" the sail on the surfboard........ sorta :-)

If I lower the Jib , will I still be able to race it with the current rules.

Aparently lots of poeple here in Denmark have these boats.....I just dont know any of the guys yet

I wouldn`t want to modify the boat so much that I cant be within the rules and participate at some time..

Also, not installing the bulb cover....does this just give a little extra speed ?

in theory..yes....but you wont see any diff. (bulb cover)

lowering the jib should be ok with the rules, but canting the bulb NOT ok!

Hmm...

I was down at the local hobby shop today.
They only had a Seawind SE fiberglass version... but after I inspected the hull, I saw some of the fiberglass gelcoate had loosened at the keel area. Also, the hull surface looked like oranger skin here and there. Must be quite old.
So I decided not to buy it even though the owner gave me a good price for it....after showing him the defects :-)

I dont like the blue deck either...doesn`t look good

If I bought theis model, it would have to be sanded doewn, and painted.

I`d rather buy the ABS hull version.

Ill go to another hobby-shop tomorrow and see if he has the other one in stock.

Is it only the hull in glass that is different in the SE version ?
And what good does that do ?
Weigh less ?

Thanks, Sonnich.

I'd suggest to stay away from the SE...the quality of the SE is NO good...I had both.

Get the ABS, cheaper and probably stronger! I know it sounds strange, but the SE is really really bad!!...specially around the keel post! very weak, very bad quality! but yes the weight is a bit better..not much and again not worth the troubles

I purchased a Sanibel 36/600 by Pro Boat; the boat looks nice and sails well. The keel is long and gives the boat great stability in big wind. The JR Beat Gear radio is excellent. The HiTec sail winch is very strong.
I drilled out the original rudder shaft and epoxied a 1/8” brass tube into the rudder shaft. I think it’s stronger
than new. I sailed it on the pond today I really like it!! I am making some wood decking for it, what do you think?
How do you like my Wal-Mart stand $6.97?
