Default Question for Sailmakers

What's the deal with making your own sails? I get mixed, strange answers from everyone I ask about this. Some say it's pretty easy and some say it's part VooDoo and witchcraft. And must be done in the light of a full moon.

I know for most guys, stitching a button back on a shirt can be challenging. God intended us to work with stone axes and spears...not needle and thread.

But I've whined and moped around about my stock sails until my very clever wife is willing to make anything to shut me up.

OK, now let me ask the question again. Given the right materials and a clever seamstress wife to do the task, WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH MAKING YOUR OWN SAILS? I just don't understand the problems with doing it. And if there are problems, what are they and HOW the devil do you stitch around it?

SURELY there are more than a dozen people on planet earth wise enough to make a good set of sails!!!!!!!!!

Help.

making sails are easy...making they work is Voodoo and witchcraft...
Making sails involves more than building skills...you have to understand what you do! and why you do it!
Dont get me wrong, everyone can make sails...and they all will work....but to win races...you d better get a "pro" make them

Wis - (OR ANYONE) is there a link or booklet available on the subject? Surely someone has put their wisdom down in print somewhere! We don't want sail making to be another "secrets of the ancients" lost forever.[]
